At the end of the third quarter, Brock was ahead 34-29, and coming into the last minutes of the game, the score was tied 40-40. P.S.S. went ahead for the last time when April Copeland sunk two foul shots, in the last minute. P.S.S. then scored another basket before the final buzzer sounded. That win puts seniors in third place. In the only defeat of the the afternoon, the midget girls dropped their game 29-14 to the Brock midgets. The high P.S.S. scorer in that game, which leaves the midgets in third place in their division, was Barb Fit- zgerald, who hit for seven, points. Forget got two assists, while Desroches, Ladouceur and Gillesby } Flyers lose another "ee to Orillia team Midland-Penetangu- ishene Flyers found their long lost offensive strength in Friday's game against Orillia Travelways, unfortun- ately the defence was unable to come up with a similar effort. Flyers outshot Orillia 43-30 but once again were handed another loss. Dave Nicholson scored four times, leading Orillia to a 6-5 victory. Flyers' coach Larry Banks was encouraged with his teams showing. "Our forward lines are- starting to click but now its our goaltending that's poor,"' said Banks. Newcomer Rob D'Annabale replaced Joe Gibson in the final period of Flyers 6-1 loss to Barrie last week, and continued in the nets against Orillia. He played a solid game but couldn't handle the Travelways himself - he needed some help from his defence but it wasn't there. Skaters, were constantly left untouched in the slot in front of D'Annabale, and if they missed on their first shot they could usually field their own rebound Banks was not entirely happy with his goalten- ders performance, promising to reinstate Gibson as starting goalie in Thornhill Wednesday. He feels the lack of practice hurts them the most. "All our goalten- ders are weak on cutting down the angles,"' says Banks, "'and they tend to back into their net too fare Midland got on the scoreboard first with a goal by Larry Cowen. Dave Nicholson replied for Orillia with his first goal from a-scramble in front of the Flyers' net. Ten minutes later Nicholson skated wide around the defence and let a shot go from the faceoff circle that D'Annabale never saw. Coach Banks criticism of his goaltenders blocking of angles seemed all too correct on the play. With less than a minute remaining in the first period Paul Robillard swooped out from behind the Orillia net and from an impossible angle managed to slip the puck past a startled Stu. Par- nham. The power play goal made up for a scoring chance Robillard missed early in the period when the puck slipped off his stick when he had the goaltender beaten. Scrambly play on the part of the Flyers highlighted the early part of the second period. Midland defenders were handing the puck to Orillia players on many occasions and only heads up play by D'Annabale kept them from scoring. But the flood couldn't be contained forever as Orillia struck for two quick goals. Dave Nicholson popped _ his third in a row from directly in front of the net. D'Annabale had stopped the initial shot but an Orillia player jumped on the rebound and fed Nicholson who was left unmolested in the slot. Orillia continued to storm all around the Flyers' net, hitting the post on one occasion and missing the open net on a couple more. Larry Cowan was busy roughing it up in front of the net as an Orillia player walked right.in_and_ scored. their. fourth goal. ~lastplace« team... Good forechecking by Andy Lacroix set up Midland's third goal as he stole the puck from an Orillia player along the boards and, passed to John St. Amant. who scored on a low wrist shot. Midland found their second' wind after St. Amant's goal and rushed the Orillia net. Once again the defence was at fault as they couldn't match the fine effort of their forwards and allowed Orillia to score. Defenceman Dan Rowat helped the cause however, by pulling the Flyers to within one goal before the end of the second period. Dave Nicholson scored his fourth goal of the game midway through the final period on a play that should have been stopped by any oneoof three or four Midland players. The goal was unassisted as Nicholson waltzed his way across the blueline and beat D'Annabale just inside the post on his glove side. With six minutes remaining Neil Parker scored on a power play for the Flyers to pull them again within one goal. However, a minute later Dave McLung tripped an Orillia player at centre Ice and effectively reduced any chance Midland may have had of tying it up. A sizeable crowd was on hand to watch the game, one that Orillia coach Mike Callon said hard to get excited about.
