Early Canadian family learns of its history by Shirley Whittington "We all remember our heritage" says Waverley's Mrs. Mossie Snider, one of the seven McWatter sisters whose recent reunion was featured in -a Toronto newspaper and was part of 'BC morning radio brpadcast. 'or the seven sisters, (There were eleven in the family. have died) heritage i Four brothers the family enshrined in memory. But with the 42 grandchildren, 98 great- grandchildren and 23 great-great-grandchil- dren of William and Matilda McWatters the heritage is kept alive in "An Early Canadian Family" a book of family history and sepia photographs collected by Morley Kells, Mrs. Snider's nephew. Each of the descendents was given a copy and Matilda William were children of Vasey homesteaders. After their marriage they lived in Vasey and Waverley. Today they lie buried in the Vasey cemetery - land which was once part of their parental homestead. Mossie Snider has happy memories of life on the farm with ten brothers and_ sisters although with such a they were one large family, never all home at time If you can't remember... think Remembrance D Day ee in Midland... Sees: BS "The boys- Ab, Colonel and Alfred went out west in the thirties," she says. "Times were hard then, and they went on harvest excursions. The fourth boy, Jack. went to work in the mines at Timmins. He died when he was 34, and we all thought it was lung trouble from being in the mines The happy times on the farm included lots of hard work. "We girls used to milk the cows, and separate the milk and wash the separator," recalls Mossie. The laundry was all done on a wooden scrub board, although later on we got a wooden hand-operated machine." "We used to spend whole afternoons ironing,' she continues "We used flat irons that we heated on the wood stove." Sometimes Mossie and her brother Ab would be sent across the fields with a basket of home churned butter. and some eggs which they'd exchange at the Waverley store for tea or whatever was needed at home."' The four boys had the job of keeping the woodbox filled ra remember my father in the evenings, whittling down kindling with his jack knife, until it was ever so fine. Then he'd lay the fire in the big stove for the morning." "What did we do for ee In the summer we'd play ball in the yard. In the winter I'd play the organ and we sing all the songs we knew while mother sat and knit socks and mitts." On Sundays the family travelled three miles to Sunday School in the old Methodist Church in Vasey. 'Then we'd all go to grandmother's for lunch and attend the big brick Presbyterian (now United Church) in Vasey in the afternoon Sometimes we walked, and sometimes. we travelled in the family Deomocrat which was a big four-wheeled buggy with two seats, and a team of horses." William McWatters was a fervent Orangeman and Mossie remembers the Fourth of July as a highlight on the family calendar. "In the parade, Dad beat the big drum for the Vasey LOL and Ab beat the Kettle drum." Christmas on the farm was special, although presents were mostly homemade. 'We got a lot of clothes - mitts and that kind of thing. I remember Mother putting the plates around the table for Christmas breakfast and there'd be an orange on each one. An orange in those times was a big treat." The big family Bible records the geneology of a family that lived through two wars, a flu epidemic and the great depression. All the children were born at home. Violet Drennan was. the first She had eight children of her own, and now lives in Toronto Alfred was the next born. He went away to the First World War, and many years later died in Saskatoon Thelma Elliott was the third child. She now lives in Midland Next came Albert (Ab) who sailed on the Great Lakes for a time. He died In 1971 Mossie Snider was the fifth child and her birth was followed by that of Colonel who died in 1959. Jack and Lola (Kells) followed Gretta married Hector Farragher and now lives in Midhurst Fern (Mrs. Charlie Bennet) and Evelyn (Willis) were the last two children. They both live in Toronto Grandma Matilda lived until 1960. "There wasn't a grandchild that didn't spend some time at Grandma McWatter's place in Waverley," says Mossie Snider. Matilda MeWatters was buried on her daughter Thelma's birthday Grandfather McWat- ters died in 1940, and his funeral was on the same day as his daughter Fern's birthday The McWatters are an early Canadian family who know where they came from, thanks to Morley Kell's book oe NGG or om pe eee ae lt yea Stunning Fun Fashion !
