Citizen sports beat Flyers clobber Owen Sound 6-3 \. Yes, you read it right! 'he Midland-Penetan- guishene Flyers won their first game of the season Friday night as they defeated the team from Owen Sound by a score of 6-3. The Flyers unveiled a new coach and three new players, brought up from the Midland Juveniles, and ended their 13 games winless streak. The new coach, Ed Dorion, who was assistant coach for the first part of the season, took over for last week's game after the former coach, Larry Banks, left the team because of a dispute with management over player discipline. The Flyers didn't take the lead in the game until the 15:45 mark of the second period, but they never allowed Owen Sound to get more than one goal up on them until that point. Owen Sound opened the scoring in the first period, when Scott McKelvie put one in the net, assisted by Pat Cooney and Mark Kazarian. One and a half minutes after that goal, Cliff Jordan retaliated for the Flyers, assisted by Larry Fallon. Still in the first, Owen Sound took the lead again when Pete Playford scored unassisted. At the 13:18 mark of the second period Rene Pelletier answered with an unassisted goal to tie the score once again. It was Pelletier who put the Flyers out in front for the first time in the game when he took the puck from Neil Parker and Gary Walkers to put the Flyers in the lead 3-2. From that point on' they never looked back. Early in the third period, Paul Robillard added another, from Jordan; two give the Flyers a two goal buffer, which turned out to be all they needed. Owen Sound came back at 7:05 of the third, as Kazarian beat Flyers goalie Joe Gibson unassisted to once again close the gap to one. The final two Flyers goals were scored by Pelletier, from Don Rowat and Andy Lacroix, and Gary Hansford, from Lacroix. The Flyers and Owen Sound each picked up 14 penalties went to goal tender Gibson, an unusual occurrance, as he picked up two munites for slashing, and two minutes for throwing the puck forward. Flyers' coach Ed Dorion said after the game, "I just thought they played a good game. They came ready to play." He added '"'They played three periods, which we hadn't been doing." Dorion gave part of the credit for the victory to the new, more physical brand of hockey the Flyers played Friday Juveniles defeat Base Borden The Penetanguishene Juvenile hockey team played Base Borden to a 6-6 tie last Friday night, in a game which saw Base Borden attain a five goal lead before the halfway point. He said the Flyers had been doing more prac- tising lately because they were beginning to be able to get ice time in arenas aro und the area. They are now practising Wednesday nights in the Elmvale arena. Dorion said there would be a lot of travelling involved, but added, "I guess we'll have to do it." Flyers owner Ron Sauve, said the three Juveniles brought up for the game, Vince Decola, Tim Merkley and Ross Prentice, played well, but said he did not know if they would be staying with the team. With regard to the change in coaching for the team, Sauve said, "We had to make a change. We had to do "something to turn things some player changes.' around." He em- phasized that he was not blaming Banks for the long winless streak. "Without practice time, I can't fault anyone,' he said. Sauve said everybody was getting frustrated, the change was needed, and it was easier to replace the coach, than to replace the whole team.
