- [Citizen sports beat Wednesday. December 8, 1976 | Beat Barrie 5-2 Awin, atie and a loss for the Flyers xe s Midland-Penet- a ishene Flyers ta® 2 tough schedule on: the' weekend, and came away with three points. Flyers won at home against the Barrie Colts Friday night, travelled to Orillia for a match Saturday night that ended ina tie, and ran into a hot Colts goaltender Sunday night as they lost to 3arrie Friday nights 5-2 Flyer win was perhaps their best game of the season "We should have been ahead 5-0 at the end of the first period,' said owner Ron Sauve. Flyers out- shot Barrie 18-4 in the first 20 minutes with Rene team a 2-0 lead. Peltier's goals came 13 seconds apart, the first on an unassisted effort. Both teams were flying in the second and third periods. Heafty checks were dished out from both teams, one such smash nearly sent Gary Han- sford right over the boards. That check was in retaliation for Hansford's second period goal where he was set up all alone in front of Colts' goaltender Hal Hake by Larry Fallon. Flyer fans received a seare early in the third period as Barrie struck for two goals inside of three minutes. Jamie Laws and Mark Gillan- Peltier giving the home ders were the goal 6al and 2 assists. ws Red Wings 7 Recreation , Scene by Ron Marchildon 4 Penetanguishene recreation coordinator I would like to thank all the people who helped make the Bake Sale for the Girls Ringette League such a great success. The Flyers didn't fold as they would have earlier in the season. They kept pressing jumping on the puck at every occasion and forcing turnovers. The strategy paid off as Rene Peltier potted his third goal of the night from a scramble in front of the Barrie net. Larry Trottier got his first goal as a Flyer six minutes later off a shot from the faceoff circle An injury and a stalled car resulted in Flyers missing a chance for a win Saturday night at Orillia The Travelways:scored twice with less than three minutes to go in the game to salvage a 6-6 tie with the Flyers. Neil Parker and Rob Jackson didn't make the game because of ear troubles and Larry Trottier injured his knee, resulting in the Flyers going with two forward lines for most of the game. The action wasn't as fast moving as_ in Friday's game because of the leg weariness of the Flyers. John Beauchamp with the hattrick, Hansford with two and Trottier with a single, were the goal scorers for Midland. Midland scored the first goal Sunday night in Elmvale but Barrie responded with two and proceeded to beat the understandably sluggish Flyers 4-3. A good-sized crowd turned up in Elmvale to cheer on their adopted team. Manager Red Urquhart said they could be seating 500 people if the Flyers played regularly in Elmvale, opposed to the less than 200 that make it out for games ion Penetanguishene Beauchamp continued his scoring streak with two goals, Tim Merkely in his second game as a Flyer netted a single goal. St. Joseph's second in volleyball tourney The girls really showed the boys how it's done! After a disappointing calibre of play was exhibited in the elementary school boys' volleyball tournament Nov. 27, coaches officials, and organizers were extremely pleased to see how well the girls played the game December 4th. The fair sex got a chance to show off their talents during Saturday's area three girls' volleyball tournament. Although 'spike- was a nonexistant word in the matches, the girls did manage to set up plays and on many occasions took the full three hits in getting the ball over the net, something the boys rarely did. Bayview School from Midland was the winner, wrenching victory from St. Joseph of Penetanguishene in a three game see-saw battle. St. Joseph handily won the first game 15-9 and looked as if they would .coast to victory. They built up a seven point lead in the second game before Bayview got it all together and rebounded for a 15-7 victory. The hollers of the young fans were deafening in the third game as they cheered their schools on. At one point referee Ray Brien had to ask the fans to be quiet during serves as the girls couldn't concentrate Bayview kept up their momentum going into the third game and on the strength of their serves beat St. Joseph 15-7 for the overall victory Bayview substituted players freely throughout the day, contrary to the rules drawn up for the event. However the rules had been waived before the games by officials because it was impossible to keep track of the girls being substituted as only a few wore numbers. St Joseph teacher and tournament convenor Martin Lalonde was unaware of the change of rules and partially at- tributed his team's loss to being psyched out by the constant movement at the other end. The minor controversy took nothing away from a day of good volleyball and high spirits on all sides. Coaches and players from all 11 teams from around the area mingled freely, exchanging volleyball strategies. : On their way to the finals St. Joseph was matched up _againsf Parkview. Parkview is still wondering what happened. St. Joseph's Lena Belcourt was first to serve and she never gave up possession of the ball, scoring 15 points on serves and shutting out Parkview 15-0. t_265 KINGS a ~~ GEORGE MARSHALL REAL ESTATE LIMITED REALTOR "® REAL ESTATE BROKER FOR 30 YEARS" __ MIDLA D 526-2293 Trying to sneak it in the hard way Flyers' Rene Peltier tries for a fourth goal as he flies through the air behind the Barrie net. Hindson Marine reconfirmed its spot in the basement of the Penetanguishene Rec- reational Hockey League Sunday, as the team went down to defeat 6-3 at the hands of Emery's Electric. Hindson Marine held its own for the first period as the teams played scoreless until the first minute of the second. At that point Hindson Marine looked as though it was going to win its first game of the season, as Roger Dusome scored from Ron Gregoire. Ken Morrow scored unassisted just over a minute later, and it was 2- 0 for Hindson-Marine. However, before the second period ended, Emery"s Electric had stormed back to take the lead 3-2 on goals by Denis Lemieux, from Ken Popple, Bill Klug from Bill Couling, and Lemieux from Popple again. Hindson Marine did not give up though, and just over three minutes into the third, Larry Leroux scored from Dusome to tie the score. From then on it was all Emery's Electric, as Rick Duval scored two, assisted on one by Popple, and on the other by Lemieux and Popple, and Lemieux scored his third of the morning, unassisted In the second game of the morning, Ken's Esso picked up its eighth win in nine starts, as it dumped B. and J. Gas Bar 4-1. Ken's Esso took a two goal lead late in the second ~ period; "as Paul Loughran scored from Peter Arbour, and Billy Arbour scored from Guy Ealey.
