A serious -- and not so serious look at Midland aldermen's resolutions Everybody makes New ear's resolutions, even - members of nd's new council. e made the rounds of the new council members and asked them if they had anything to resolve in the coming year-- personally or politically-- and they gave us some interesting answers. Moreland Lynn, Midland's _mayor-elect, said that he is prepared to earry out the com- mitment he made to the electors in 1976. Even though he expects con- siderable time to be taken up with his political life, he also stated he plans to be spending more time with his wife. Lynn also stated that he isn't about to quit smoking entirely, but he is prepared to "cut down"' on the amount he presently smokes. Statistics were not available for Lynn's daily cigarette intake. Reeve Sam _ Ancio added a different twist to one of the more popular New Year's resolutions. Ancio boldly stated that he was prepared to quit smoking '"'cigarettes" once and for all. He ad- ded, however, that he expected to be enjoying the occasional cigar. "Tt will just be the odd puff," he promosed. On the political side, Ancio pledged to do his very best when working in cooperation with "the council, the ad- ministrative staff and all the members of the community." Ancio also expressed a desire to spend, "a little more time with my wife." Deputy-Reeve Bill Ogilvie stressed that he "will endeavour as much as one person can, to improve the general atmosphere of municipal affairs in Midland--this will include my representation as Deputy- Reeve on Simcoe County Council." Ogilvie said that after "the tumult and shouting of the !ocal campaign fades it is now time for all persons of goodwill to address themselves to the many issues confronting our civic ad- ministration." Nancy Keefe, alderman for Ward 1, stated that she simply wanted to start the New Year with "a clean slate." "T can't stand having any unfinished business," she said. 'It must be the influence of my Scottish and Calvinist ancestry." Keefe added that she is a new member to council and that she will be " a little cautious" at first. "The management of a city is a big operation," Keefe said. "'I'll be very careful where = any spending is concerned, and I'll be listening to the constituents. If there is one thing that my ex- perience with Contact taught me, it was how to Happy New Year from the staff of this newspaper be a good listener." Bill Orr, councillor for Ward 2 admitted that "business has been so busy at the store, I haven't had time to consider resolutions." Later, Orr.also stressed the importance of careful spending. "We'll all be keeping a close eye on municipal expenditures,' he said. Richard Platt, alder- man for Ward 4, hopes that he can help make Midland council "run as smoothly in 1977 as the Public Utilities Com- mission did in 1976." "I'm going to be very careful in my approach, and I won't be talking unless I know what I'm talking about." Platt chuckled briefly as he admitted that one of his resolutions would be not to sit between Sam Ancio dnd Bill Ogilvie at any of the council meetings. Jim Malcolm of Ward 4 stated faankly that he wasn't about to give up any vices for 1977. "T'd like to lose 25 Ibs. but you know how these things are," he said. Although he will no longer be the chairman of the Arena _ Building Committee in 1977, he pledged his assistance whenever it may be needed.
