The Brule Garrisons take on Bradford in their league finals in a best 4 of 7 affairs. The Juveniles are taking on Gananoque beginning this past weekend away from home. Next game will be this weekend at the Penetanguishene Arena. The Minor Peewees are taking on Lindsay in their Ontario playoffs. We also hope that the Midgets fared well this past weekend in their series with Huntsville. We certainly wish all the teams good luck in their endeavours and hopefully bring back some Ontario champions. I have mentioned before about the fact that only a few people turned out for the Minor Soft- ball meeting a few weeks ago. Out of that meeting we have coaches and managers for two girls teams the Midgets and Novice. We are still looking for men and women to coach, manage etc. on the following age group teams. Girls: Squirt - 10 years; Bantam - 14 years; Juvenile - 18 years: Before January 1, 1977: Boys: All teams from 10-18 years; 5 teams available. If you would like to take on one of these All Star teams and get involved with Minor Softball please call me at 549-8492 and let me know what age group etc. you would be interested in looking after. Our intention is to enter all teams in the Ontario playoffs this year. Sponsors may have to be had if enough people can be found to look after all these teams. At present it looks like house league will not operate this year. Ringette March 8, 1977 Belles | Playoffs First Game Green 8, Red 2 The Green machine was led by Anne Robillare with two goals and 1 assist. Debbie Cadeau also scored two goals. Donna Brooks had 1 goal and 3 assists. Lucille Robillard had 1 goal and 1 assist as did Rosanne Quesnelle. Cathy Lethbridge had a single goal while Wanda Buttineau had 1 assixt. : Pat Peltier had both goals for the Red team with an assist going to Pauline Robillard. Petites Budgies 5 Firebirds 2 Donna Cowan led the Budgies attack with 3 goals. Grace King had 2 goals and 1 assist. Tina Beausoleil and Donna Dupuis each had 2 assists. LuAnne Hook had both goals for the Firebirds assisted both times by Charlene Marchildon. Tweens Championship round Little Rascals 7" Aristocrats 2 The upset of the year was pulled off by the Little Rascals as Cathy Marchand and Shelly Forget each had two goals. Single goals were scored by Mary Theresa Gignac, Janet Duval, and Patty Beausoleil. Assists included 3 by Gizelle Quesnelle. Two by Mary Theresa Gignac singles by Patty Beausoleil and Janet Duval. Downs Corpus Christi 22-2 itizen sports beat Game goes into overtime __Penetanguishene recreation coordinator arrisons lose cliffhanger The Penetanguishene Brule Garrisons went down to defeat 7-6 in the first game of their final playoff series against the Bradford Packers, played Sunday afternoon in Bob Magnus, representing Legion Branch 68, presents the trophy to the winners of the Branch 68 Annual Mixed Bradford. The game was a cliff- hanger that had fans sitting on the edge of their seats throughout regulation time and two periods of overtime. The top mixed rink | Bonspiel. Terry Spiker led the Garrisons with a hat trick, while Tom Gignac scored two, and Hugh Robertson picked up one goal. Penetangishene led 2-1 SZ Burkevale takes Area 3 consolation Burkevale School defeated Corpus Christi 22-2, to take the con- solation championship in the Area Three Elementary School Girls Basketball Tournameent, while Elmvale's Huronia Centennial School took the championship with a victory over Sacred Heart School. It was unable to penetrate Elmvale's zone defence, passing the ball back and forth outside the key until finally letting a long shot go or losing the ball. Elmvale took ad- vantage of its op- portunities, hitting on a good percentage of their chances. , Burkevale School won the consolation championship in the Area Three Baksetball Tournament with a 22-2 John Webb from left to right are: Lisa Paradis, The tournament was held at Midland Secon- dary School on Saturday, with 14 teams battling it out for the championship. Sacred Heart opened the tournament with a 22- 10 victory over Port MeNicoll. Also in the opening round was a 19-15 victory for Bayview School over Burkevale School, Parkview School downed Victoria Harbour School 24-6, Huron Park' squeaked past Huronia Centennial's number two team 14-12, Lafontaine beat Our Lady of Lourdes 25-12, Monsignor Castex narrowly downed Corpus Christie 13-10 and Huronia Centennial started on the road to the championship with a 20-2 victory over St. Joseph. Maureen Arbour, Maureen Ferguson, Inge Schwauss, Kim Willson, Jan Maddack, Janet Duval and Erika victory over Corpus Christi in the final. Around coach __ Roi. Patty Ronald and Jackie Decaire also played in the victory. In the playoffs. Sacred Heart snatched victory away from Bayview, winning 18-16, Parkview lost by one point to Huron Park 27-26 and Lafontaine thumped Monsignor Castex 26-7. : Sacred Heart downed Huron Park 18-12 in the semi-finals and Huronia Centennial whipped Lafontaine 22-8. - Port MecNicoll con- tinued its disappointing play in the consolation playoffs, losing to Burkevale 14-10. Victoria Harbour beat Huronia Centennial's number two team 8-5, and Our Lady of Lourdes was clipped by Corpus Christi 10-8. The semi-finals pitted Burkevale against Vic- toria Harbour, with Burkevale | emerging _ victorious 22-8. Corpus Christi downed St. Joseph 23-12 and the consolation championship went to Burkevale with a 22-2 Corpus thumping of Christi. St. Joseph's takes after the first period, and at the end of the second, it was 4-3 for Bradford. The Garrisons came back in the third, and they went ahead 5-4 with just about a minute and a half left in regulation time. Then with just about 30 seconds left, Bradford tied it 5-5, to force overtime. With just 38 seconds left in the first 10 minute overtime period, the Garrisons scored to make it 6-5 , but once again Bradford was not to be counted out. With only eight seconds left in the overtime period, they came back to make it 6-6 and force a sudden death second overtime period. It was only at the 7:55 mark of the second Juveniles take overtime period that Bradford finally wrapped it up with a goal to make it 7-6. Garrisons' captain Alvin Robillard credited Garrisons' goaltender Frank St. Amant's brilliant play with keeping the team in the game. St. Amant was subjected to 60 shots on net by Bradford during the course of the game. Robillard said the team only took 11 players down to Bradford Sunday, but he said all team members would be dressed for tonight's game at the Penetanguishene Arena, Game time tonight is 8:30, as the Garrisons attempt to tie up the series. series opener The Penetanguishene Juveniles have taken a one game lead in their best of five playoff series against Gananoque, as they picked up a 7-3 victory in Gananoque Sunday afternoon. The teams played. a scoreless first period, before Penetanguishene got on the board about half way through - the second, when John St. Amant beat Gananoque goal tender Ed Matthews, assisted by Greg Arbour. At the 19:18 mark, Ken Cowan scored from Paul Lefaive to make it 2-0 going into the third. Gananoque came back with a short burst early in the third, as Todd Foley scored from Doug Griff and Jeff Gibson at the 4:17 mark, and Kevin Lackie scored from Rick Knowles just 16 seconds later to make it 2-2. Then it was Penetanguishene's turn to score two quick ones. Ken Cowan scored from Paul Lefaive at 8:14, and Pat Duquette scored 21 seconds later from Mike Orser, to make it 4-2. Gananoque came back 35 seconds later with a goal by Larry Herbison, with an assist going to the goalie Ed Matthews. Penetanguishene _ sc- ored again, six seconds after that, at the 9:16 mark with Ken Cowan getting his third of the afternoon, from Lefaive. The fifth goal in the space of two and a half minutes came at, the 10:38 mark, when St. Amant found the mark, assisted by Ken Cowan and Lefaive. Larry Cowan scored the final goal of the afternoon, at the 16:10 mark, from St. Amant, to make it 7-3. As the scoring seems to show, t he Penetanguishene squad showed no signs of tiring towards the end of the longer than usual game. At this stage of the playoffs, they are playing three 20-minute periods, all stop time. Previously, they had been playing 15- minute periods. Penalties were not a major factor in the game, as Gananoque picked u lead in final series The St. Joseph's team in the Penetanguishene- Lafontaine Boys' Basketball League, has taken a 26 point lead in their two game total point playoff series - against Burkevale, as a result of a 39-13 victory last Friday afternoon at St. Joseph's. The top scorer for St. Joseph's was. Brian Robitaille, with 14 points. Robert Vaillancourt picked up 10, Paul Parent scored eight, Mike Cascagnette got four, Robert Genier had two, and Blaise Robitaille got one. Scoring for Burkevale were Bryan Lethbridge with seven, and Wayne Stewart with six. The second game will be played this Friday afternoon. Last Thursday, in the last regular season game, St. Joseph's downed Lafontaine 40-37. Again Brian Robitaille was the top scorer for St. Joseph's with 15 points. Paul Parent and Robert Vaillancourt each got eight, Walter Buttineau had five, Blaise Robitaille got two, and Michael Cascagnette and Jerry Ladouceur each scored one. Donald Sample scored 22 points for Lafontaine, while Michel Desroches got seven and Alain Marchildon and Michel P. Desroches each scored four. 10 penalties to Penetanguishene's nine. Only one of the Penetanguishene goals, the last one, was scored on a power play, while Gananoque failed to capitalize on any of the Penetanguishene infr- actions. The second game of the series will be played this Saturday at 6:45 p.m. in the Penetanguishene arena, and the third game is scheduled for Sunday evening at 7:30 in Gananoque. The bus for that game leaves the arena at noon. Wednesday, March 16, 1977 A sprawling defense In a defensive move typical of Maple Leaf star Borje Salming, this Hindson Marine player makes a valiant attempt to stop the attack in Sunday's game against B and J Gas Bar. It was a losing effort, though, as Hindson Marine went down to defeat 5-1. They are now eliminated from playoff contention, and B and J goes on to meet Ken's Esso in the' finals this Sunday at 10:00. B. and J. Gas Bar takes Hindson Marine 5-1 Penalties were costly for Hindson Marine Sunday morning, as B. and J. Gas_ Bar capitalized on five power play chances to defeat Hindson Marine 5-1, and take the best of three semi-final playoff series two games to one. Hindson Marine held its own for the first two periods of the game, as they managed to take a one goal lead into the second period, despite taking three penalties in the first. The only goal of the first period was scored by James Dupuis from Bobby Dion. In the second, Brian Merkley scored from Paul McDonald and Louis Belcourt, while Roger Dusome was off for hooking, to tie the score at 1-1. It was only in the third, that B. and J. managed to turn the game around, and walk away with it. Near the' half way mark, Gerald Gignac scored from Belcourt and Marcel Vallee, while Hindson Marine was once again a man short, to put B. and J. out in front 2-1. With five and a half minutes left in the game, sports calendar Sandy McKillip made it 3- 1, from Belcourt and Merkley, while Bobby Dion was off for roughing. Three minutes later, it was Greg Quesnelle from Billy McIntosh, while Dusome was off for elbowing, and with just under two minutes left in the. game, Quesnelle scored again, from Jack Stewart, while Hindson Marine was again a man short. The recreational league playoffs continue this Sunday, as B. and J. Gas Bar takes on Ken's Esso at 10:00 a.m. in the first game of the final series. They lead the series one game to none, and they play Gananoque in Penetanguishene at 6:45 Saturday evening. On. Sunday the series moves back to Gananoque for a game at 7:30 p.m. Intermediate 'C' Hockey The Penetanguishene Brule Garrisons play Bradford tonight at the Penetanguishene arena. Game time is 8:30. The next game will be held on Sunday in Bradford, and then the series moves back to Penetanguishene for a game next Wednesday night. Recreational Hockey The Recreational League finals begin this Sunday morning, as Ken's Esso takes on B. and J. Gas Bar.
