Recreation Scene by Ron Marchildon Penetanguishene recreation coordinator I would like to call another organizational meeting for Minor Softball to take place on Thursday, April 7, 1977 at 7:30 p.m. in the Arena Lounge. If you wish to see house league softball this spring I would suggest that all interested people come to this, the final meeting. I will call to get this organized. If not enough people show up house league will not operate this year. I also need more coaches, managers etc. for All Star Teams. I would appreciate all those people to also show up for this meeting. I would like to remind everyone about the Figure Skating Carnaval to be held Saturday, April 2, 1977. Your support would be greatly appreciated. Lose 7-5 Sunday Fourth game here Saturday Juveniles win one, lose one, lead series two to one The Penetanguishene Juveniles lead their best of five semi-final series against Gananoque two games to one, after a weekend in which they won a game in Penetanguishene, and lost one in Gananoque. Saturday night, the Penetanguishene squad downed Gananoque 8-3, in a hard fought game which got fairly rough in the third period. The penalties were an important factor in the game, as Gananoque picked up 18, and Penetanguishene was called for 14. Five of the 11 goals scored in the game were power play goals. Penetanguishene do- minated the game throughout, as they led 3-1 at the end of the first period, and 5-2 at the end of the second. Larry Cowan led the Penetanguishene team, with three goals, while Ken Cowan scored two, and John St. Amant, Aime Gignac and Pat Duquette got one apiece. The scorers for Gananoque were Todd Foley, Jeff Gibson and Bill Brown. Both Gananoque goal tenders, Ed Matthews and Bruce Martin, got a rigorous work-out Saturday night, as they switched part way SOLEPILISIEDEELL LLL L LLL Garrisons down 3, face elimination The Penetanguishene Brule Garrison now have their backs to the wall, as they face elimination from the Intermediate "C" finals tonight at the Penetanguishene arena. The Garrisons lost two more to the Bradford Packers last week. In last Wednesday's game, the Garrisons came on strong in the first few minutes, but once Bradford got rolling, the goals came fast and furious, and when the final buzzer sounded the Garrisons were down 8-1. Wayne Miller got the Garrisons only goal of the game, at the 3:26 mark of the first period, with assists going to Ken Scott and Tom Tannahill. Seven minutes later Les Chaisson scored from John McKnight to tie the score, and just under six minutes from the end of the period Hank Arts scored from McKnight and goaltender Bernie Killoran to make it 2-1. Arts scored again mid- way through the second, from John Radis, and Don Stevens scored - from McKnight and Ted Vasey about a minute later to make it 4-1 going into the final period. Paul Robinson made it 5-1 early in the third, when he scored from Andy Purmals and Stevens, Chaisson picked up his second and third als of the night, the first Mipesisied and the second rom Robinson, and then Arts capped off the scoring with his third of the night, from Radis and Don Holledge, to make it 8-1, Neither goaltender was particularly hard pressed, as the Garrisons only managed to get away 21 shots on Killoran, while Bradford took only 24 shots at Garrison goaltender Frank St. Amant, The Garrisons' attack was a little weak through most of the game, and in the third period it was particularly ineffectual as Bradford managed to kill seven penalties without being scored upon. Bradford got a number of breakaways during the course of the game with the Garrisons defense getting caught up the ice, leaving St. Amant to face the attacks alone. In Sunday night's game in Bradford, amid what could only be termed questionable officiating, the Garrisons went down to defeat 7-5. The Garrisons took an early 1-0 lead in the first period, on a goal by Peter Brissette, from Terry Spiker and Bill Bowker, but Bradford came back with goals from Hugh McEvoy, John Radis and Andy Purmals, before Tom Gignae scored his first of the night, from Bowker and Spiker to make it 3-2 at the end of the first. Gignac scored his second of the night early in the second to tie the game once again. The assist on that goal went to Brissette. Paul Robinson scored with nearly eight minutes left in the period, to put the Packers out in front again, but Spiker came back with a power play goal two minutes later to tie it up again. Bowker got the assist on that one. Hugh Robertson put the Garrisons out in front for the second time in the game, with a_ short handed goal assisted by Gerrard Lachapelle and Alvin Robillard, before McEvoy scored his second of the night, with only 13 seconds left in the period, to make it 5-5 going into the third. Bud Gardiner put Bradford back in front half way through the third, and With only 49 seconds left in the game, Don Holledge put the insurance goal into an empty net while the Packers were short handed Garrison goaltender Frank St. Amant did an outstanding job in the net, as Bradford outshot the Garrisons 34-17, The fourth game of the series will be played in Penetanguishene tonight, and if the Garrisons win that one, the series moves back to Bradford Sunday through the second period. Two midgets, Mark Decourcy and Steve Lalonde, were pressed into action for the Penetanguishene team Saturday night, partly because Mike Orser was out with a one-game suspension. The two played a solid game, and Decourcy picked up an assist In Sunday night's game, played in Gananoque, the roles were reversed, as Gananoque won a rough penalty riddled game by a score of 9-4 minutes in penalties, and seven of the 13 goals scored were power play goals As a result of a fight in the third period, one of Penetanguishene's most potent scorers, Ken Cowan, will be sitting out the next game, as will Gananoque's Steve Higgs. The game was close through a high scoring first period, and part of the second. At the end of the first, Gananoque led 5-3, and Penetanguishene came back to within one early in the second, before Gananoque turned it on with three more unanswered goals in the second and one in the third Once again, Larry Cowan led the Penetanguishene squad with two goals, and Ken Marchildon and Grant Quesnelle each scored one. Bill Brown, Shawn Harpell and Jeff Gibson each scored two for Gananoque, while Todd Foley, Pat Funnell and Steve Higgs scored one apiece The fourth game of the series will be played in Penetanguishene, this Saturday night at 6:45 Game five, if necessary, will be played in Gananoque on Sunday Each team was assessed a total of 43 Speeding across the blue line Louis Belcourt, of the B and J Gas Bar Penetanguishene Recreational Hockey League, breaks in team in the across the Ken's Esso blue line in Sunday morning's game won the game by a score of 4-2 to take a one game lead in the best of five series Ken's Esso Staff photo Sete cececnenn eR Elementary school league champs St. Joseph's defeated Burkevale in the two game total point finals of the Penetanguishene Lafontaine Boys Basketball League, Although Burkevale won the last game, held on Friday, St. Joseph's won the whole thing with a combined score of 59-50, Kneeling in front are Blaise Robitaille and Jerome Ladouceur, Standing behind them are Vaillancourt, Martin Lalonde Robert Genier, (coach), Louis Robert Vaillancourt (captain), Paul Parent and Ed Scheniman (coach), In the rear are Mike Vaillancourt (coach), Ken Martin, Jean Carriere, Brian Robitaille, Walter Buttineau and Mike Cascagnette. Just over a minute later, Billy McIntosh scored from Dan Dah- mer, to put B. and J. out in front again, but Ken's Esso came back to tie it up again before the end of the second, with a goal by Paul Loughran from Peter Arbour and Don Maurice. The score remained calendar tied at two apiece until the 6:24 mark when Loughran scored the winner, again from Peter Arbour and Don Maurice. Jim Pollard scored the insurance goal with about four minutes remaining in the game, assisted by Billy Arbour.
