Wyebridge resident Apple of Midland's eye off to Miss C.N.E. competitions Lorna Wood wouldn't mind winning the Miss C.N.E. crown at the Toronto exhibition next week. But then again, she wouldn't mind in the least not even making it into the finalists' round. "I don't see how anyone can go to the C.N_E. expecting to win - not with 80 girls competing,' " she ays quietly. "But I am _ looking rward to it. I think it'll e lots of fun," she adds with a shy grin. "I like meeting people, and peng together with the girls. "I guess I'm really going for the ex- perience." ' The 'experience' won't be entirely new to Lorna who last fall was crowned Miss Midland 1977 at the Midland Fall Fair, sponsored by the Tiny- Tay Agricultural Board. That title won her the honour of representing the Midland area at the Miss C.N.E. 'Sweetheart of the Fairs' competitions to be held August 16 and 17. Each contestant will be interviewed for 4-6 minutes by a contest judge on the Tuesday, then the 10 finalists chosen will have to give three minute talks on Aerie turers oT agricultural societies in the province. The possibility that she may have to give that talk doesn't phase Lorna either, though she admits (somewhat ruefully) "I haven't even written it (the speech) yet!' Her farm background and six years of active involvement in the North Simcoe 4-H organization have provided plenty of background material for just such a talk. Active in 4-H Within the ranks of the Ebenezer 4-H, the 19 year old Wyebridge resident has served as president, secretary, treasurer, press reporter - "Gust about anything!" She's received her provincial honours, for which she had to have belonged to 12 clubs, and with 16 clubs to her credit has only got two more to go for her Advanced Honours. You don't have to be a housewife type to enjoy the 4-H activities," she says with a knowing twinkle in her eye. "'It's great for just the basics of survival!" Cooking, baking, handicrafts, gardening even proper table setting are but a few of the 'basics' Lorna feels every young person can benefit from. Lorna's interest in home economics was instrumental in her decision to take a four year home economics program at Ryerson Polytechnical in Toronto this fall. "I don't know what I'll come out like,"' she laughs when asked what she'll do after finishing the program. She's particularly in- terested in being a county home economist, largely because of her interest in people and travel. But no matter what she "comes out like", Lorna is sure Lorna Wood, Miss Midland 1977 Don't limit industrial potential warns Platt In a statement to the media released last Friday, Midland coun- cillor Dick Platt came out Strongly against SCAN's call for a major change in the industrial zoning of the waterfront. Platt emphasizes the need for year-round employment in Midland and the potential Midland's deep water port has to attract industries which require water frontage and ready access to railroads, such as the CN line which runs along the shore of Midland Bay. "Tt would be folly for Midland to limit its at- traction for potential industries by zoning the deep waterfront serviced by the waterfront, non- industrial." According to Platt, zoning the shoreline for industrial use now does not pre-empt a change in the future; the official plan, he says, is merely a development guide for the town in "'the foreseeable future" which he sees as being a maximum of ten years. In that period of time, Plaft feels, Midland's P jority is for iy "ustrial " development in that context Platt Fys "I am not prepared to close off any options to industry, by zoning the deep water and railroad facilities which some industries may require, as off limits to them." Every "industrial asset must be maximized"' if Midland is to be com- petitive with other towns, enlarge its industrial assessment and provide SUPWUET CCC V EEC COR more jobs in the coming decade. The newly annexed Heritage Drive area is insufficient for all potential industries' needs, Platt says, and to provide that as the only option to industry would "Limit unduly our in- dustrial options and ... encourage industrial Midland employers...to elsewhere."' Although Platt says he would approve' the location of marina or a hotel along the water- front, he emphasizes his primary concern for Midland is for "year round employment paying industrial scale wages." locate chamber's numbers down Fewer businesses than expected have renewed their membership with the Midland Chamber of Commerce, a fact which could influence the financial picture for the chamber in the coming year. In his July newsletter, Bill Vidler, General Manager of the Midland chamber points out that 20 of the 1976 members have not yet sent in 1977 membership fees. In addition, 24 downtown merchants or business people participating in the downtown revitalization program have yet to financially support the chamber's activities. Although the chamber's present financial picture "is still in good shape", Vidler emphasizes that it had budgeted for in- creased membership this year to carry out a number of new activities. Increased membership, he adds, is also en- couraging to the volun- teers who keep a number of chamber programs on- going. The downtown revitalization committee is but one example of this group of dedicated businessmen. Scholarship winner Patricia A. Trax of Midland was among over 150 en- trance scholarship winners to McMaster University for the 1977-78 school year.
