The local season begins next week, and if you've never tried this popular Canadian winter sport, you can give it a whirl by showing up an evening between October 17 and 22nd. There is no fee, and equipment will be sup- plied. All you need is warm clothing, a pair of rubber soled shoes (not street shoes) and a sense of adventure Midlanders have been curling since 1919 and a list of the founding fathers reads like a chapter from Midland's history. The first con- tractor was J-C. McMullen and some of the original members were Capt. Ed Burke, Digby Horrell, J. B. Hanly, A.W. Bald, Capt J.H. Hudson, J.J. Moores, R.G. Nesbitt, J.B. Roebuck, J.H. Parker, N.K. Wagg, M.J. Bray, M.E. Tully, Charles Hartman, W.E. Preston, D.S. Pratt, Norman Playfair and Nap Laurendeau. By 1929, there were 110 curlers at the Midland rink--all of them men. They curled on natural ice and it wasn't until 1933 that the Arena Gardens began supplying artificial ice to the Curling Club. Midland's artificial ice plant was the only one between Toronto and Winnipeg for many years. Ladies were not allowed into the male curling preserve until 1942, when they were admitted for an annual fee of $2.50. Mrs. Dalton Hudson organized the ladies' section and she was honoured with a life membership--the sole woman to be so honoured until 1977, when Mrs. Keith Bertrand, Mrs. Karl Bertrand and Mrs. Robert A. Megaw were named to the distinguished list. Over the years, the club has been headed up by wgmen presidents 31 times. This year, Mrs. Ken Richmond will be in the president's chair. Putting Midland on map Local curlers have put Midland on the map. In 1942, Del Hastings and Fred Hill brought the Governor General's trophy to the club. This worthwhile coverage protects insured federation members for up to $200,000 for liability from damage which they might accidentally cause to the person or property of others while hunting or fishing. Accidents do happen regardless of how safety conscious a person may be. No doubt a landowner is much more likely to allow an insured hunter on his land than an uninsured one, the Federation says. Sims trophy at the Kingston Club. The 1976-77 season was a profitable one as three ""first-evers" were brought to the Midland Club. Russell Howard, skipping Paul McDonald, Len Patterson and Kent Carstairs, was one of the winners in the Ontario British Consols' Spiel. Shirley Stokes and Lynn Morton brought Ladies' Tankard honours to the Club, and June Walton, for the second year in a row, pilotted her team to the district win of Ladies' Senior's Com- petition in Orillia and Penetanguishene. There are trophies a- plenty for sweeping in the Midland club. In its 30th year of competition is the Edward's Trophy for Ladies' Open Bonspiel. And in 1964 the Midland Ladies hosted the first All Grandmothers' Spiel at the Midland club. Past- president Jim Nicholson says 'We have added steel beams in the club room areas, and there are plans for additional ar- ches on the ice surface. Nonetheless, * it looks like a good year. A major event is the Golden Anniversary of the CSL sponsorship. A three day 32-rink event will draw competitors from Mon- Priejallly 9s Loc OO), Collingwood and Welland. It's to be held the first week of March. Open to all Club membership is open to anybody, and it isn't expensive. Fees are $85 for men, and $65 for women, Juniors may join for $30 and a social membership is available for $20. Club membership embraces not just curling, but a fairly ac- tive social scene. "Very often," says Nicholson, "there will be a couple of tables of bridge going in the afternoon. We have a snooker table and a bar. Each year we host a New Year's Eve party, and we celebrate the end of the season by skating the ice out. And in between there are parties and dances, and the fun of out-of-town spiels."" In 1919, the minutes of one of the first meetings of the Midland Curling Club read in part, "The Club looks forward to being a permanent success for years to come." A success it is. More than that, it has become a permanent component of Midland's social and recreational life. Members still recall with fondness the day when four generations of Midlanders were under the Curling Club roof. Long time member J.H. Bridges curled with his daughter Mrs. Harold MacAllen and his grand daughter Mrs. Bob Morton. And watching was his great grandson, Jeffrey Bell.
