Movie review by Terry Dupuis The old heroic romantic adventure films of the 30's and 40's included such __ well-remembered classics as Gunga Din, Beau Geste, Lives Of A Bengal Lancer and The Four Feathers. In recent years this type of movie entertainment has just about disappeared. But last year the adventure movie made a striking comeback in The Man Who Would Be King, a stirring adventure epic in the classic tradition The classic adventure film has received another much-needed shot in the arm this year with March or Die, a high-budgeted action epic about the French Foreign Legion. It opens this Sunday at the Odeon Theatre in Midland March or Die takes its title from the motto of the French Foreign Legion ("marche ou creve") The story takes place in North Africa around 1920 The French government sends an archaeological expedition to Morocco to uncover a priceless tomb A French legion unit is assigned to protect the expedition from an Arab chieftain who is at tempting to rally his people to destroy the French expedition March or Die is an American film with an international cast. In addition to American star Gene Hackman, there is Italian actor Terence Hill (of the "Trinity"' films); French actress Catharine Deneuve; and Swedish actor Max Von Sydow Like the old adventure movies of the 30's, March or Die contains strong elements of suspense and intrigue. And also plenty of action, including the best desert warfare sequence I've ever seen in any film. At the same time, in keeping with the more cynical 1970's, March or Die tends to be less romanticized than the older adventure films; it tends to be grittier and more realistic March or Die benefits greatly from its authentic on-location filming.
