2 at a Heritage concerns Society Concerns about Simcoe County's heritage have become _ increasingly prominent in recent weeks. Perhaps the much publicized controversy over the Hog Bay railroad trestle has prompted area residents to become more sensitive to issues of historical value and preservation of land- marks, but there has not in the recent past been such an awareness and concern over the area's heritage as there is now. The latest development in this trend is focused on Barrie. At the next meeting of the Simcoe County Historical Society, scheduled for January 10, "Barrie's Lost Heritage"' will be the topic of discussion. The session will feature an illustrated -- talk delivered by two Barrie historians, Irene Perri and Isobel McBride. They will describe and show photographs of many buildings in Barrie which have been destroyed over In conjunction with the January 10 meeting, the release goes on the say, the Society is planning to issue a pamphlet that documents several im- portant stages in Barrie's history. the years, but which had tremendous local historical value. The meeting will be held at the Simcoe County Museum. The hot doggers were out in full force Monday afternoon at Mountainview Ski Hills. The ski area was a popular place, as local enthusiasts took advantage of ideal conditions and the last day of the holiday season to hit the slopes. Not Lynn on talk show Midland Mayor Moreland Lynn travelled to Toronto Tuesday morning to tape an in- terview with well known radio personality Betty Kennedy. Before he left, Lynn explained that he will be talking about Midland, its Centennial year, and the activities and programs that are scheduled as part of the celebrations. Lynn said he will also discuss life in a small town, showing how if offers many of the same services and activities that city people normally consider as existing only in urban areas. "Most people who come to Midland from Toronto see the town only from the perspective of a tourist,"' Lynn said. "I want to show them that there is much more to Midland than its being a tourist centre, that it's a good place to live and work." Lynn said he expected that the show would be broadcast the day of 3 charged Three Victoria Harbour area men have been charged by Midland OPP in connection with the theft of three Massey Ferguson snowmobiles from a property on Concession 13, Township. Frank had been away from home since August, and although close contact had been kept through letters, it was extra special to talk in person to him. When the Ehmckes reached their son, he had just finished a few hours of Christmas morning skiing. He was in a chalet, enjoying Christmas with a family he was staying with. The scene was fairly normal except for one thing - the chalet Frank was resting in was in Switzerland, and the people he was spending Christmas with was a German family which has 'adopted' him for a year. Frank is a Midland Rotary exchange student, and has been in Europe since August 15. He is presently staying with his second host family, who have a home in the town of Wuppertal, located in the industrial heartland of West Germany, near the large cities of Dusseldorf and Cologne. His stay in Germany is sponsored by the Midland Rotary Club, which has over the years brought young people from various points on the globe to Midland, and sent young Midlanders on year long visits they never will forget. While in Wuppertal, Frank is attending high school, working on his grade twelve. The family he is staying with at present have one boy his age, and two younger daughters, and, ac- cording to his mother, Frank has fit very well into the family unit. Although Frank is attending school, his education is by no means limited to the classroom. Taking advantage of his being in Europe, he has travelled extensively in the four months he has been away. He spent a week camping in France, has travelled throughout Germany, and recently returned from a two week holiday on the Mediterranean. Frank also attended a three day Rotary ex- change conference in Berlin, and as his mother reports, had an _ op- portunity to meet ex- change students like Lifestyle program for 1978 A program called "Healthy Lifestyles in Huronia" will be the Midland centennial year project of the Huronia Red Cross, it was an- nounced this week.
