Guilty of false UIC statements Cyril Russell was fined $12,000 in Provincial Court on Monday mor- ning after pleading guilty to 12 counts of making false statements to the Unemployment Insur- ance Commission. He was also asked to make restitution of $1,300 to the commission for the amount of money he was overpaid. According to the commission investigator, on some claims during a 16 week period Russell claimed he had no work or earnings when he was working on other claims, he e.clared less money than he was making at work. He had three employers during the 16~ week period in which he earned $1,945.61. R. MacKinnon, who represented Mr. Russell, told the court that Mr. Russell lives in Port MeNicoll with his wife and children as well as his inlaws. He explained that his wife handled all the financial matters in the family since Mr. Russell cannot handle money. She was the one that did the calculations on the UIC ecards and her husband signed them. Mr. McKinnon added that Mr. Russell knew the statements were false. Mr. Russell went for- ward on his own initiative and volunteered to repay the commission after he was charged. He still works part time driving a bus and his wife works sporadically. MacKinnon asked that a fine be imposed since Mr. Russell's family would suffer if he was incarcerated. The UIC Commission asked that the minimum fine be imposed and Judge Nadeau concurred. A sum of $100 was charged on each count. Guy Ronald Geddes pleaded guilty to mischief by willfully damaging the windows at the. Unem- ployment Insurance Commission office in Midland. He was fined $100 and put on probation for six months for the purpose of paying for the broken windows., According to the crown prosecutor, John Alexander, Geddes kicked a thermopane window and broke it. He fled from the scene only to return five minutes later to break another window.
