Movie review Curtis good news in Bears' latest by Terry Dupuis The Bad News Bears was a baseball team of kids which was first in- troduced in a 1976 movie of the same name. Walter Matthau played their harried coach, and one of the Bears was a tomboy played by Tatum O'Neal in her first role since Paper Moon. The movie was sucha big hit that the Bad News Bears ap- peared in a sequel last year called 'Breaking Training'. In that outing they had a new coach played by William Devane. The team is back again this summer in a third movie, 'The Bad News Bears Go To Japan'. This time their coach is Tony COCOONS LECCLCOCCOCCCOSE Curtis. Curtis plays a hustler named Marvin Lazar who promotes a trip to Japan for the Bears. The Bears are to challenge a rival Japanese baseball team. Through Curtis' con- niving he even manages to arrange to have the game telecast. The comic highpoint of the film occurs in a scene in which Curtis is forced to take part in a match with a Japanese wrestler, after a promotional scheme backfires on him. Tony Curtis has his best role in recent years in 'Go To Japan'. Lately he has been appearing in rubbish like the violent gangster film 'Lepke' and a cheapie horror flick called 'The Manitou'. Curtis' Marvin Lazar character is a hustler and an opportunist taking advantage of the Bears, but he remains a likeable scoundrel.
