North Simcoe 4-H Swine Club tours Wessel farm The North Simcoe 4-H Swine Club held their monthly meeting on Thursday, July 13th, at Horst Wessel's farm on the 8th Concession of Sunnidale. The evening started with a tour of Mr. Wessel's barns. The tour started in the farrowing area of the barn and progressed through pens of replacement gilts and young boars and barrows. The group entered the second barn where they found remarkable looking sows and breeding boars. Wessel and Al Harris, a Technician with the Livestock Branch, Ministry of Agriculture and Food, commented on different things to look for in a gilt and boar, some things that would later turn out to be advantages and some to turn out to be disadvantages. Both gentlemen commented on what breeders would be looking for in the future so as to produce bigger pigs with larger bone structure. In conclusion to the tour, Al Harris tested a gilt for backfat. He showed us how the new testing machines worked and how they proved to be more accurate than the ruler. On behalf of the Club, Janet Merrett thanked Mr. and Mrs. Wessel for their time and tour of their barns, and also for the barbecue that followed. She _ also thanked Mr. Al Harris who was able to find time in his busy schedule to explain backfat testing methods. The next meeting is tentatively set for August 10th at 8:00 p.m. at the home of Kevin Beswick on Highway 27 near Elmvale. At this meeting Kevin and David will be demonstrating swine showmanship techniques. Also to be discussed is a demonstration. It is hoped other clubs will become involved in making up demon- strations as more com- petition creates better quality. Lindsay area and business.
