We welcome your comments and letters - Helicopter service gets green light MANAGEMENT BOARD of Cabinet (Ontario) has approved the continuance, on a permanent basis, of the Ministry of Health's helicopter ambulance service. We are pleased with the decision reached at Queen's Park. The project, which literally got off the ground back in September of 1977, was set for a trial period of one year. Later it was extended to March of this year. By extending the trial period to the spring of 1980, the ambulance services branch was able to prepare an evaluation report on the 'chopper's' effectiveness , compared with alternative methods of delivering care to the critically injured across the province. It should be pointed out that last year the helicopter transported 232 patients in critical condition to Toronto hospitals. A number of these patients were' transported from Huronia District Hospital and Penetanguishene General. We are pleased the service will continue to operate with its complement of six staff, specially trained in critical care methods and familiar with the land ambulance system. The 'chopper is not intended to take away from land ambulances but has been designed to transport patients in stabalized condition to Metro hospitals in the fastest possible time when and where time is of the very essence. We think the province has come up with the best of both worlds: providing top notch ambulance service in Ontario as well as bolstering that service with a permanent helicopter ambulance service so as to bring critical patients to specialized hospitals by the quickest and best way possible. Shout about our local assets WE HERE in the heart of Huronia take for granted many of our popular tourist and historical attractions. Last weekend many of them opened for another season while next Saturday, Huronia Museum at Midland will complete the annual re- opening syndrome. Martyrs' Shrine, Ste. Marie among the Hurons, the Naval and Military Establishments and Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre are all now open for another season. If previous seasons are any indication all will be heavily frequented this year by local and out-of-town visitors. Our many attractions and the fact that we are situated at the gateway to the 30,000 islands has made this part of Huronia an ever popular place to visit for a day, a weekend or for a week or more. We often take our man- made and natural assets for granted and instead plan our own weekend trips and holidays to far-off shores and cities. This year make it a point to visit our local attractions first. Tell your family and friends about our Huronia. Let's make it a point to be goodwill ambassadors. Let's shout about the wonderful things we have here in the heart of Huronia instead of knocking or apologizing for those few frills we don't have. As a safety procedure the Village deemed it necessary to advertise and hire four adult crosswalk attendants to tend critical crosswalk areas within the village. These attendants in my opinion have done an excellent job protecting our children from being injured at critical times throughout the day, namely morning going to school, lunch break and leaving school. Mrs. Frieda Windover, Mrs. Jane Armstrong, Mrs. Judy Robertson, Mrs. Barbara Hawke - I personally salute you four for your time, and thoughtfullness during all sorts of weather conditions for succeeding in protecting our children within the Village of Port McNicoll. As a second item, the ratepayers should also be praised in their efforts in regard to a property standards by-law in which certain premises have been asked to clean up and remove debris from their place of residence as requested by our by-law enforcement officer, Mr. Carl Archer. Many residents have taken it upon their own to clean up and be proud of the place in which they live. The citizens of the Village of Port McNicoll are concerned and from my viewpoint, very responsible when asked to pitch in and help make our community a better place to live. A third and important program was spearheaded by our village council with again a surmisable amount of help from concerned residents and excellent newspaper coverage was the Block Parent Program which seems to be near completion within the Village. Also credit must be given to our public relations officer of the Ontario Provincial Police from the Midland Detachment whom I know had to screen every Block Parent applicant before granting permission to the applicant. This certainly has had to take a lot of time and know they are also concerned and dedicated public servants. In closing I am proud to say that I live in the Village of Port McNicoll and if the same type of progress continues within the Village of Port McNicoll as mentioned previously, we can all stand tall together and be happy we have chosen to live where we do. Pat Amerlinck 559 Simcoe Ave. Port McNicoll, Ont. Business missed Dear Sir: It has come to my attention that James H. Lynn Funeral Homes were omitted from my list of sponsors of ice time at the Easter Tournament. I sincerely regret this oversight and I hope that this regular sponsor will by continuing this needed community support in spite of my negligence. Yours truly, George E.
