poh 7 a a a Bear Island by Terry Dupuis Bear Island is an exciting and well- produced adventure suspense drama adapted from one of Alistair MacLean's many novels. Previous MacLean novels to be transferred to the screen have included The Guns Of Navarone, Where Eagles Dare, Ice Station Zebra and Puppet On A Chain. Bear Island is on the whole better than any of them, except possibly The Guns of Navarone. Bear Island deals with a team of experts who are sent from the United Nations to an island off the coast of Norway. Here the small expedition is to study the changes in the world-weather situation. They are to be isolated at this outpost for a period of six months. Intrigue soon begins to rear its head after several members of the expedition are mysteriously killed. It turns out that there is a fortune in gold bars on the island; the site was previously a base for German submarines during the Second World War. A modern-day Nazi group wants the treasure back for its coffers, and someone in the expedition is an agent who has been sent to retrieve it, willing to kill anyone who stands in his way or stumbles across the secret. Bear Island is a Canadian-British co- production, and at $9 million it stands as one of the most expensive movies to have been made here. Along with The Changeling it also well-produced adventure drama stands as the best Canadian feature film I've seen so far this year. Bear Island has a good cast which includes Canadian, British and American players. But most of them are playing members of an international expedition which includes Germans, Russians and Norwegians, and their accents are not always convincing. Richard Widmark in particular comes off rather poorly playing the old German scientist who is the leader of the expedition. Also in the cast are Canadian Donald Sutherland as the movie's hero marine biologist; Vanessa Redgrave as a Norwegian nurse; Christopher Lee as a Polish scientist, and American players Lloyd Bridges and Barbara Parkins. Also prominent in the cast is Canadian actor Lawrence Dane in the role of Widmark's assistant. The Characterizations in Bear Island may be a little thin and sketchy, but it's the type of movie in which characterization is usually of secondary importance. More important to these stories are the action, suspense and intrigue, and Bear Island has these in abundance. Also, production-wise Bear Island is top- notch, particularly in its fine color camerawork. There is some beautiful breath- taking scenery in it. The movie was shot at Stewart, British Columbia, and in Glacier Bay, Alaska. oe ; : Reasons to be happy You'd be smiling too, if you had won one of a) a new Ford Mustand or b) a one week vacation in the Bahamas. And earlier this week the gals, 26 in all, braved wet almost snow-like weather to compete in a Tuesday match. Back up by 12 hits, Peter Robson's team scored two runs in the second, third and fourth Truc innings and added a seventh run in the bottom of the fifth. Mr. Submarine scored runs in the top of the second and fourth in- nings. Dennis Gignac took the loss for Mr. Submarine. His team managed only five hits off Earl Cousineau. O'Shaughnessy.
