On Saturday, June 14, some 18 4-H girls and two leaders set out on an overnight camping trip to Awenda Provincial Park, Penetang. They had enthusiastically called themselves the "'Elmvale Nature Nuts'"'. Who would ever suspect that this same group would be huddled together, soaking wet, complaining in unison the next morning? Awenda is a wilderness type cam- pground and provided an ideal setting for an Outdoor Living club. Some of the braver girls even had a chilly dip in Georgian Bay. The 4-H members were responsible for building fires, cooking meals and setting up tents, with the guidance of their leader, Carrie Nesbitt, and _ Lois Bertram. Perhaps the highlight of the trip was a group sing-song under the stars. Afterwards eighteen tired girls turned in for the night, looking forward to the next day's activities. Sometime in the middle of the night, the club's luck seemed to take a turn for the worse. It rained all night. Two girls had a tent collapse on them. Breakfast was prepared in cold and rainy weather. A tarp was put over their heads to keep them dry and it later collapsed. A_ blood- curdling scream was heard as one of the girls found a rubber snake in her tent....and their clothes were wet! The leaders seemed to feel that the day proved to : -- 4-H girls brave camp-out be a_ good lesson, especially in packing for a camping trip. Patience pays off. We left the park in sun- shine. Many thanks to our leaders who have taught all to be better campers!
