ils Tae Gur ditties: Aes eT ees i et a a Adding color to visit Being a part of the program to welcome Governor General Ed Schreyer to Midland last week was a wonderful experience for these Brownies and Cubs. Less fun was the fact it rained very hard just before the sleek limosine carrying the Schreyers to town arrived at the Midland library. You skin. may not be able to tell by looking at this photograph, but everyone is soaked to the Midland Bulls lose 3-nil in close match against York Midland Bulls, always the bridesmaid but never the bride this season, almost pulled off their first victory of the year Saturday going against York County Rugger Club in an out of town affair. By the time the dust had settled Midland was again on the short end of the stick but the score was only 3-0 this time. York scored its only points early in the contest on a penalty kick to make it 3-nil. However neither York nor Midland could get on the score board after that even though Midland had a number of good chances including two missed penalty kicks. It was by far the best game Midland Bulls has played of the four, the team has mounted this year. So ends the first half of their spring-fall schedule with the exception of a "'friendly" to be played on the Midland Secondary School pitch come July 5 when Toronto Irish comes to town for the Bull's annual Pig Roast and Game. Game time on July 5 will be at 2 p.m. Then it is rest and relaxation until September when the lads are back in action again with most of the games left in the schedule to do home matches. It would appear that each outing brings the Bulls closer to a win and by the time the fall rolls around there's no doubt they'll have collected a victory or two at the rate players have been improving this Interest in Shondecti grows The 17th century will be relived in Sainte- Marie Park next month when the first. annual "Shondecti'"' --_unfolds. More than 300 years ago, the Jesuit priests and their helpers arrived in Huronia after a treacherous journey of 800 miles and 50 lengthy portages from Quebec. They came to Christianize the natives and built Sainte-Marie among the Hurons as their headquarters. The arrival of settlers to the interior of a wilderness land was a time of rejoicing, and "Shondecti'"', a Huron term meaning '"'they returned to such a place," will recreate the spirit of the event. The celebration will be held on July 12th with a portage down King Street in Midland from the Centennial Arena to the Town Dock. Par- ticipants can then either race along Midland Bay and the Wye River -to Sainte-Marie Park, or follow leisurely in a flotilla of canoes, ex- periencing the feeling of arriving at Sainte-Marie in the 17th century. The canoe trip offers something for everyone and this is also well reflected in the full afternoon of activity planned at Sainte-Marie Park. French-Canadian folk music, and well- deserved refreshments such as apple cider, sumac tea, and lemonade, will meet the canoe enthusiasts as they steer towards the nark. Appeal Adding to appeal of the event are award presentations for the first, second and third finishers in the small canoe division carrying three people or less, and the large canoe division made up of four people or more. Awards also compass the most authentically dressed crew, the youngest en- crew, the group travelling the greatest distance to participate, the firm with the most entries and the first fibreglass canoe to finish, donated by Fibreglass Canada. Prizes include the newly published book, "Sainte- Marie among the Hurons'"', and a Sainte- Marie reproduction wooden memento. Activities for the younger crowd are also included in the day, as the children learn how to make corn husk dolls, among other 17th century recreations. -A portage race, representing the many portages the early explorers made, will follow along with a tump line race. In making portages through the wilderness, the men would carry _ their belongings in a sack with the tie resting around their forehead. Often their loads were as heavy as 250 pounds, but for the tump line race, the loads will be much less, but heavy enough! Canoes Forty-five canoes have already registered and Byrick expects well over 100. Employees from Midland's Leitz company have entered 15 canoes to date. Teams from the Midland police and fire departments are also among the numerous participants involved. Merchants have shown interest in promoting the special events and many have donated money towards a promotional poster, including Walker's "Electric Ltd., North Simcoe Tool and Manufacturing, Bay Mills Ltd., Dominion Electroplating Ltd., Advanced Extrusions Ltd., Rowika Industries Ltd., Indusmin Ltd., Ernst Leitz Canada Ltd. and RCA.
