By RAINA GROSSMAN Charles Aznavour, who is often 'compared to Frank Sinatra, is showing America the traditional views of Paris -- and its view of music -- in "Numero Un," the French musical salute to America, airing Monday, July 14, on PBS. Whereas Americans are once again hearing the blast of beating rock music over the sweetness of folk lyrics, Azna- vour says French music remains lyrical, similar to Bob Dylan and Rod McKuen. Inflationary times haven't hardened the fervently romantic French nationalists. "I don't believe," he says, "that France has a general music. We are lyric writers. We write about messages, politics, communication between a man and a woman. We are literal minded." Likewise, the special is nationalistic in spirit. It com- memorates the gift by the French people of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor with an hour-long musical variety salute. Regarding his taking viewers on a tour of Paris, Aznavour says, "I felt like Maurice Chevalier. It made me feel old. This is not a spe- cial show for me. "It's like something Hitch- cock used to do. The Orchestre de Paris, under the direetion of Daniel Barenboin, conducting a Ber- lioz Requiem, will appear, as will the Barry Collins Ballet group dancing to the music of Michel LeGrand.
