| 'ASN Promising crop year fades =: with unsettled weather by Ron Jones President Simcoe County Federation of Agriculture What a difference a few days make - and a few degrees in tem- perature! The promising crop year of early May has dimmed considerably in much of the Province with the month of June coming down as one of the coldest on record, or at least the worst in the memory of any of the present day farmers. The cold wet weather affects individual farmers differently of course, depending on location and types of cropping. Some farms in North Simcoe have recorded frost on as many as five mornings in June, other areas may have seen no actual frost but have certainly been hurt by cold winds and heavy rains. With the_ prairie drought and shorter eastern growing season it is a good bet that grain prices should strengthen this year. Serious politicians will be taking a close look at world grain reserves, and who controls the distribution of the world's food reserve. Farmstead and Home Improvement Competition For several months now a dedicated group of Federation people have been _ putting together a Farmstead a nod H cos mise Improvement Comp- etition to run in con- junction with the 1981 Plowing Match. Only a few days remain for entries in the 'most improved farmstead" class (July 1). However, entries will be accepted until June 1981 for the "thistorical", "the century farm,' 'rural or urban most at- tractive", and _ the "already improved farmstead"' classes. Committee publicity chairperson, Marion McArthur, Stayner, promises that many worthwhile prizes await entrants in the contest in addition to a com- plimentary banquet in September next year, at the conclusion of the judging. For more information on entries or details anyone interested in taking part should phone Robert Cowan at the Federation office, 728-2330. OFA at the CNE An exciting op- portunity is in the development stage for those food producers who have been dying to give their side of the food price dialogue. Tune Ontario Federation of Agriculture has joined with Foodland Ontario and several Marketing Boards to present al large exhibit at this year's CNE. OFA have been asked to provide grass roots people to meet the thousands of consumers that are expected to pass through the exhibit during the 19-day show. Because of Simcoe County Federation's mall display experience a call has come this way for volunteers. SCFA has found that farm wives do this work exceptionally well. So far SCFA Board has not yet had an op- portunity to respond to the OFA _ request. However, anyone in- terested in putting in 'part, or all, of a day at the CNE booth should contact the Simcoe Federation office at 728- 2330 as soon as possible. Farm Labour Pool Simcoe County Federation of Agriculture Marketing and Inputs Chairman, Joe Lindner, Bradford, is able to report steady progress in negotiations with the Federal Department of Employment and Immigration to establish a Farm Labour Pool in Simcoe, Peel and York Counties. A Lamb _ (Local agriculture manpower board) is being flushed out to undertake the selection of an office site, staff and to develop operational policy for placement staff. These manpower offices have an ex- cellent record of satisfying farm labour requirements in other parts of Ontario. Joe Lindner's efforts should result in relieving many farm labour headaches in Simcoe. Niagara Escarpemnt Advisory Committee The Niagara Escarpment Committee to the SCFA has now made an initial report to the Federation. A draft is being prepared of the brief to be presented to the N.E.C. Phase I hearings. The advisory committee will review the draft and, when accepted, report on another brief for the Phase II series of hearings. Trans Canada Pipelines Simcoe Federation has learned from the O.F.A. Director of Properties, Dale Ferns, that Trans Canada Pipelines have filed an application with the National Energy Board for another natural gas pipeline to eastern Canada. Apparently the preferred route parallels the Ottawa river. However, if that application fails, an alternative is to twin the existing pipeline run- ning through several Simcoe County Townships, then east to Montreal. Simcoe farmers will be kept informed on the progress of the T.C.P. application. Farm Politics The Annual mem- bership meeting of the three Simcoe O.F.A. regions will be held about the end of Sep- tember. All members are notified by mail of the date and location. Three O3k=A.. Directors and nine additional Convention Delegates are to be elected at that meeting. SCFA holds its Annual Meeting at the same Only one alarm on weekend Aside from one alarm, members of Midland Fire Department en- joyed a quiet weekend. Fire Chief Terry Lethbridge noted this week, only cali his department received was on Saturday to quell a small fire at Ste. Marie among _ the Hurons. Apparently sparks from an open pit fire in a long house set some material on fire. Damage was all but nil. Meanwhile the fire chief is continuing his investigation into a $100,000 fire more than two weeks ago that destroyed a good part of the famed Georgian Lodge mansion just east of Fuller Avenue in Sunnyside. a ee 5S Pwo et td time: Township Directors are to be elected then as well. Farmers get busy the next couple of months but it's not too early to give some thought to who should represent your Township on the SCFA or your region at O.F.A. The elected have the right and the respon- sibility to conduct the affairs of your Federation. Overheard recently, "Tf farmers don't take their organizations seriously, how do they expect others to."
