Antique market 15 years young by Marion Sleep "Tt will never last!"' they said. "It won't be a success!" they predicted. "It's never been done in Midland!" they exclaimed. "They,"' (whoever they are!) were dead wrong! For the 15th consecutive year, the Summer Antique Market, sponsored by the Auxiliary to Huronia District Hospital, is ready to open its doors next Tuesday, July 15, at 7 p.m. Started by a bunch of greenhorns who didn't really know what they were getting into, as a badly-needed summer tourist attraction for Midland, the Market has continued to grow, draws up to 2,500 visitors each year, and maintains its high standards for dealers displaying their unique merchandise. Because of the rather eerie phenomenon that precipitates a heat wave each year at Market time, it is rumored that Southern Ontarians now plan their summer holidays to coincide with "that Midland Market."' Undaunted, dealers, customers and many old friends return regularly. The Auxiliary welcomes two newcomers this year - Jack and Elinor Norris, 'Treble Morse Goddard, "'Spaulding's Inn," Grafton, Ont. Back for his 15th consecutive year is' Victoria Harbour's Herb Merry. John and Mary Carpenter and Bill Pinkney, both of Midland, will also contribute to the old-world atmosphere. i Dealers from Toronto area are: Lil Neals, Allan Markham, Joyce Munn (Drakes), Margaret Lilly (Bourre's), William Yates, and Tom Riordan. From Paris, Ont. - Ken Farmer and Peter Vollmer (Two Unicorns). Darla Milne and Norma Patriquin, "'Door to Yesterday" and Peter Myers 'Treasure Chest" will be there from Barrie, as well as Kathleen Day, Orillia, Ingrid Ivans, Bramp- ton and Doris Turnbull, Norval. Market convener and auxiliary vice- president Jennifer Chalmers and her com- mittee, who have been working on the project since February, predict that the warm weather this year will be welcome, that the attendance will soar and that the colorful merchandise will be just what visitors have been searching for. Admission remains the same as last year, so plan to attend! As with all Auxiliary projects, the proceeds Clef Antiques,"' Kitchener, and Jane and go towards helping the hospital. Neat way to find work for staffers Midland Student Employment Centre manager Carol Dengis placed at least two students in jobs, although temporary ones, as the result of a baseball game Monday evening. The Student Employment Centre, on Elizabeth Street, has found summer jobs for 421 students to date this summer. The goal for the season is 721. A team composed of newspapers and radio station CKMP lost 18-16 in seven innings to a team put together by Dengis. Because the media team lost, their employers will be hiring a student for one or two days. Dengis said Tuesday morning the CKMP will hire a student for two days to put their files in order. Also the Penetanguishene _ Cit- izen will hire a student to help paddle a canoe in and to write about the experience for the newspaper. Dengis said she will be in touch with The Midland Times and The Free Press. Dengis was pleased that the game was a close one. The earlier tie and the close game Monday evening showed, she said, that the two teams were fairly evenly matched. For game details, see ecient 8 & kes Sue (Duda |G.
