He is the chairman of the parking com- mittee of the Midland downtown Business Improvement Association (BIA). The BIA executive will meet tonight to consider the results of its campaign to drum up support for the idea. The response to the mail canvas was less than the committee had hoped for, although better than the usual response to a mail canvas, Voorzanger said. Forty responses came back in reply to about 150 letters. The committee was hoping for a 75 per cent response. _A door-to-door canvas is being conducted now. Voorzanger hopes the number in favour will increase before Wednesday's meeting. Five or six of the 40 respondents have their business outside the BIA-boundary. This is significant because, while they would not be reimbursed their expense in paying back to shoppers their parking meter money, they still support the idea. Under the scheme, a shopper will park in a parking lot and receive two tickets, instead of one. One goes in his car window, the other he can take to a participating store and get a cash refund. The store-owner in turn gets his money back from the BIA, which gets its funds through an annual levy of all businesses within its boundary. Voorzanger hopes enough businesses will participate so that the publie will not be confused over which stores validate tickets and which stores do not. and charged with fraud Monday morning as the result of a complaint made to police Aug. 7.
