Civi-cycle awards presented by Don Lawrence The day was cold, about 40 degrees fahrenheit, and the rain didn't really help that much, but 20 undaunted riders summoned up all the courage they could muster to enter a "civi- cycle" in Midland. Although the event took place over two months ago on the June ist weekend, individual prizes had yet to be presented. That problem was remedied Wednesday night in a ceremony held in the Civitan club house, located in the basement of the Senior Citizens Club House, here. Perhaps the weather may have had something to do with it, but the turnout for the event was disappointing to say the least, with only 20 riders coming Hot net-minding key to shut-out Goaltending played a key role in a ball hockey game between the Dupuis Groceteria Leafs and the McLarney Marine Vikings played Tuesday at the Penetang Arena. Dupuis Groceteria Leafs won the game 4- 0, with Mike Duquette recording the shutout, stopping 30 shots on net. Dave Dupuis played a very good in net for McLarnev Marine Vikings game, but found hat 40 shots were just a ew too many to stop. Mare Béausoleil opened the Scoring in the first period, with an assist from Allen Ladouceur and Gary Bellisle, at the 14:58 mark. It wasn't until 9:22 in * Ladouceur out back in June. Equally disappointing was the fact that there were over 400 pledge sheets out, and yet only 20 riders showed up The Fide, co- sponsored by Midland Civitan Club and the Huronia Junior Civitan Club, was a 30-kilometre ride, and despite the poor turnout, they did manage to raise $320. One person entered in the ride did have over $400 in pledges, but came down with an untimely illness, much to the disappointment of the organizers. Awards The awards were for those people who proved to be very special to the event. Bringing in the most money in pledges was Gary Wenckers of Midland for which he the second period that Dupuis were to score again, this time the goal coming from the stick of Allen Ladouceur, with assists going to Basil and Marc Beausoleil. Martin Quigly followed up quickly with unassisted goal at the 12:56 mark. Vince Delorme closed the scoring out for Dupuis, and the game, when he put the ball in, with help from Gary Bellisle and _ Allen Ladouceur. \ The win tied the senior ball hockey finals at one game apiece. McLarney Marine Vikings edged out Dupuis' Groceteria Leafs in the first game, 3-2. High scores highlight T-ball The first round of the Midland Minor T-Ball League playoffs have indicated what kind of action can be expected for the rest of the playoffs. The high scoring usually associated with the game was just that much higher, as Bourgeois Motors trounced Dairy Queen 30-18. Other scores included A & P over Pantry Shelf 29-21, McQuirter Real Estate downing Municipal Savings and Loan 27-19, and A & W nipping Arcade Pharmacy 20-17. Bell Canada won by default over J. Harvey Surveyors. Next games will pit A & P against Bell Canada, while McQuirter Real Estate will face A & W. J. Harvey Surveyors will go up against Municipal Savings and Loan, while Dairy Queen will meet Arcade Pharmacy. Bourgeois Motors and Pantry Shelf both have byes. That all will take place at the Parkview School Playgrounds, Aug. 19, at 6:30 p.m. Maddy burns up course at MGCC When this story was written, Midland Golf and Country Club Ladies Club Cham- pionship was all but over, in more ways than one. Everyone at the club seemed to know who was going to win the three-day 54 hole event, and, to say the least, it had a dramatic effect on the odds. Maddy Tannahill shot a 75 on both first rounds, leaving herself a 20 stroke lead at the end of the second round played on Wednesday. If Tannahill wins this event again, it will make it her 10th year since 1968. Page 20, Friday, August 15, 1980 received a gold medal and a gift certificate from Olympia Sports & Billiards. The second highest total was brought in by the President of the Midland Chapter of the Civitan Club, Hein Pause, for which he received the same prize, as did the person bringing in the third highest amount of pledges, Bev Burke. Hein Pause received a medal for being the oldest rider in the event, while Bruce Ladouceur claimed the medal for veing the youngest rider present that day, at the age of seven years old. Mike Tinney, senior advisor for the organization felt it could have turned out better, but feels everyone who participated deserved a round of applause for their part in the event. also. je Medal winners Some of the participants in the Midland Civitan Club "Civi Cycle', held June 1, received medals and gift certificates in appreciation for their efforts.
