Sports and things Edenwale news Passes exam Wyebridge news by John Dennis After an exciting and highly competitive season, the Wyebridge Warriors faced what was to be their final championship' drive challenge of 1980 one week ago Monday. Warriors were tangling with' the Midland Athenian Raiders in game three of their best of three quarter final series in Midland. Warrior pitcher Brian Newhouse was in ex- cellent form and along with the rest of the Warriors, he _ held Midland scoreless for four innings. It grew increasingly obvious that whoever scored the first run would have the momentum on their side. To the dismay of the many ~- Warrior supporters the momentum chose the Midland side and after seven complete innings the Warriors had come out on the losing end of a 4-0 score. Good Luck Warriors in 1981! With the regular season now _ behind them, the Warriors are concentrating their efforts on tournament play. On Friday evening Wyebridge entered a tournament in Wyevale and came away on the losing end of a 3-2 score against a team from Toronto, in their first of three games. This loss moved them into the consolation round and in their first game they eclipsed Orillia 2-1. In the consolation round final the Warriors tangled with Adco Tire and were deservedly the winners as they am- bushed their opposition 11-0. As a result they placed third overall and were able to add $100 to their bank account. Wyebridge Midgets began their semi-final series against Toanche. However, the opposition need not have shown up for the game _ as Wyebridge trounced Toanche 14-2. Paul Rowe was a standout on the mound while Steve Searl led the way of- fensively with a home run. If the Pittsburg Pirates' Willie Stargel had been in Hillsdale last week he would surely have given one of his famous stars to Steve Searl. In the three games the Midgets played young Steve poked no less than four homers. In game one against Toanche, our boys came away with a one-sided 11-0 score. This game required only three innings to play. In game, the Midgets were pitted against the home team, Hillsdale. They took this one 12-5 with Steve Sear] leading the way with two home runs, along' with teammate Leo Dubeau who had one _ four- bagger. In the final match, Wyebridge was once again paired up with Hillsdale. This time they held the home team to 1 run and completely dominated the game walking away on the high side of a 13-1 vic- tory. Steve poked another homer in this game. Paul Rowe was credited with the tournament win. In a_ gesture of friendship and gratitude, Ann and Murray Fagen would like to thank everyone who patronized them while they were owners of the Wyebridge Milk Maid and wish June Laurin the new owner great success in her new adventure. The creation of a bingo night to com- mence in the fall, the sale of the old furnace, new bookings for the hall, and the installation of the new furnace were all topics of discussion last Wednesday when the Wyebridge Recreation Centre held their monthly meeting. The next meeting will be held Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m. The Bears' Den was the temporary home of Bob and Doreen Luff- man last week as they left the village to do a little camping. All groups then presented their skits. Our groups skit was Hansel and Gretel and the parts were played by all members. Then awards and spoons were presented. All the members enjoyed this club, and big thanks to our leaders for teaching and making this club so enjoyable. It was a big fish back then It was 65 years ago, on Sept. 1, 1915, that the late H.B.- Stainton set some sort of record at Little Lake in Midland. Entering the Toronto Star's annual big bass derby, Stainton walked off with top prize after hooking into a six pound nine ounce, smallmouth black bass. It turns out it was the biggest bass caught that day in the province-wide derby. The well known sportsman was the star attraction in a story the Toronto newspaper did on him a few days after he made the big catch in Little Lake, often referred back then as Fraser's Lake.
