Hillsdale draws 600 to tournament Minor softball Teams from as far away as Toronto and Orillia gathered at the Hillsdale Ball Park last weekend for the annual Hillsdale Minor Softball Tournament, an event which drew ap- proximately 600 spectators and 13 Peewee, Bantam and Midget teams. Games got underway Saturday with Wyevale Peewees against Port MeNicoll with Wyevale winning 8-1. War- minister Bantams picked up a win over Vasey by a 10-3 score, followed by another Peewee match between Wyevale and Port with Wyevale picking up the win by a 12-6 score. The winners were presented with the Paul Johnson Trophy and $40 prize money. Toanche Midgets met Penetanguishene next, winning 5-1 and the Port Bantam team defeated Lafontaine 2-1, Perkinsfield Midgets beat Victoria Harbour by a score of 2-0, Hillsdale Midgets beat Midhurst 3-1 and Warminister Bantams defeated Port McNicoll 7-2. The last game Saturday was a close one for both teams in- volved as Lafontaine Bantams tied Vasey 8-8 after regulation play. The teams continued to play one inning of overtime but _ still deadlocked. In order to achieve a win in the match, organizers were forced to resort to counting the most men left on base at the end of the game, and soon discovered another tie at third. Vasey was finally declared the winner. In Sunday's action Wyebridge beat Toanche 5-0, Midhurst forfeited to Victoria Harbour, then defeated Toanche 6-3, Hillsdale downed Perkinsfield 10- 2 and Penetanguishene beat Perkinsfield 10-3, all in Midget play. In the Bantam semi- finals Vasey defeated Port 9-8 and in the finals for the Pat's Hair- dressing Trophy and $50 prize money, it was Warminister 6 Vasey 0. and In the midget division, Wyebridge downed Hillsdale 10-6, Midland beat Penetanguishene 6- 0 and from there came the semi-final where Hillsdale advanced following a forfeiture by Midland. In the championship round Wyebridge trounced Hillsdale 13-1 for the Lorne Whitten Sand and Gravel Trophy and $50 prize money.
