Brian French, also of Collingwood, com- peted in the tournament, finishing 23rd with a score of 305. The popular golfer won the 30,000 Island's golf classic as well as the men's title at Midland Golf and Country Club this year. The 30,000 Island's victory was his second in a row while this summer's club victory was his third triumph in consecutive years. Three local girls competed in the Ontario Summer Games this past weekend, in Peterborough, Ontario, and were awarded gold medals in the volleyball competition. Kelly Swales, 16; Mary Pat Quilty, 16; and Vicki Baziliaukas, won the round robin competition quite easily. The team consisted of the three Midland girls, one girl from Barrie, and the rest of the team coming from Toronto. Their first game was won quite easily, with 15-0, 15-0 scores over Northwestern Ontario. They then went on to defeat Eastern Ontario 15-2 and 15-2, and followed up with a victory over Nor- theastern Ontario, 15-6 and 15-4. They handled South- western Ontario with very little difficulty, 15-8 and 15-6. Their first defeat came when they met Central Eastern Ontario, losing to them 15-13, but coming back to win the set 15-6 and 15-6. They were awarded a bye game to the finals, where they once again met Central Eastern Ontario. In the finals, the team defeated Central Fastern Ontario by a score of 15-6 in the first match, but ran into a little trouble in the second game. However, they managed to narrowly Local girls on champion squad Squeeze by the Central Eastern squad 16-14 to take the gold medal. Beach Bums are winners Another summer has passed for the Midland Summer Bowling League, and the playoffs proved to be a close call for the Beach Bums, headea by Jim Paradiso. His team was half a point behind the "Crak Pots" in the regular season of play, with a count of 56 points. Harvey Stevens is captain of the Crak Pots. That didn't stop them though, as they narrowly squeaked through the playoffs with a 4,614 team score for four games, as compared to Buck Magloughlin's score of 4,587. Buckaroos were closely followed by "The Family", who amassed a score of 4,528 under the direction of Mabel Dewey. Crak Pots, despite their winning the regular season, didn't place in the playoffs. Raiders walk away with $200 Midland's Athenian Raiders took first prize money of $200 last weekend at the Elmvale Mets Softball Tournament which attracted a dozen teams from all over the province. Mets placed second while Rivalda Tavern of Toronto took third place. Local youth claims gold Mike Josland, a member of the Midland Bulls Rugby Club, and resident of Midland, is a very good rugby player. He even has a gold medal to prove it. Josland competed in the Ontario Summer Games held over the weekend in Peter- borough, Ontario, playing on the Mid- Ontario Rugby Union Under 19's.
