Don Lawrence * Sports editor * MSS will It will come as a relief to many football fans in Midland that Midland Secondary School will be fielding a senior football squad this year. The cry of panic was raised with news of the Penetang school opting not to go with a team this year because of lack of players that have been properly seasoned. Instead, they have decided to try a. touch football league within the school, giving the new players a chance to learn the game before being subjected to the roughness of the sport. Midland will not do that, though. They will have a regular 40 man team, which will play a six-game schedule, starting around the last week of September. The possible finishing date is set around the last week of October. The games will be spaced out one to a week, and the team will be coached by Randy Ritchie, of Perkinsfield, and Bob McVean of Midland. Ritchie teaches mathematics at Midland Secondary School, and McVean is the head of the math department there. The team will play in zone 2 of the Georgian Bay League, and will be joined by Collingwood, Stayner, and the three Orillia schools, should they all field teams. The first practice and tryout will be held Sept. 3, on the Midland High School football field at 1 p.m. 2 SI DR RRP TE I have football squadthisyear Sunday Sinners looking for converts Penetang's Sunday Sinners Bowling League is looking for bowlers to participate in this year's season, begin- ning on Sept. 7, at Knight Haven Bowling Lanes in Penetang. There is room for approximately eight or nine more bowlers in the league to round out the six 7-man teams. No age limit is enforced. It will only cost you $3.25 to bowl a week, with all trophies, and banquet costs taken out of that. The Sunday Sinners are part of the Midland- Penetang 5 Pin Bowlers Association. It will only cost $3 to join the association, $1 for senior citizens. That charge entitles you to crests for high games, and will allow you to enter' tour- naments put on by the association, plus giving you the opportunity to enter iarger tour- naments you might not otherwise have been able to. The league will run on a 32 week schedule, ending on April 12, with the banquet taking place on April 25. ss Reaching new heights Midland Bulls Rugger Club starts its fall schedule on Saturday, Sept. 6 in Midland when Bulls play host to visiting Muskoka Rugby Club. All seven of their runs were scored in the first two innings to give them their second victory in the best of seven series. The win puts them two games ahead, while Mr. Submarine has yet to gain a win. Softball crown is back in Penetang by Don Lawrence Penetang Juveniles have regained the championship for the town for the first time in four years, when they defeated another Penetang team, Penetang G &C 9-7 early this week in Ladies Intermediate Softball League play, at McGuire Park in Penetang. The final game was a study in deter- mination, to say the least. The Juveniles were determined to win this game, thus, ending the series three games to G&C's one, while G&C could have stayed in the series, lieing it up with a win. Yet, it seemed to be enough for both teams to be able to hold onto the ball, as nervousness inflicted every player. Anticipation was the key word for the game, and this had, in fact, a definite in- fluence on the game. The Juveniles jumped out ahead 2-0 in the first inning, and held onto the lead until the third inning, when they seemed to lose all concentration. It was here that G&C made a comeback to tie it up at 3-3 by the end of the fourth inning} Juveniles then went ahead one run, holding onto that lead until the end of the sixth inning. The seventh and final inning proved to be a let-go point for both teams, as the Juveniles went ahead five more runs, and G&C gaining an additional four runs, but finding that it just wasn't enough. The most amazing play of the game came in the fourth inning, when Sandy Dubeau received a triple on a bunt. Yes, a bunt! Of course, that just goes to show how a final game can go. Dubeau's triple brought in the first run, for G&C with Deanne King sitting on second base at the time. A party followed the victory for the Juveniles, thrown by G&C. It, however, wasn't the only thing that was thrown by G&C. Ernie Dubeau, coach of G&C was tossed into Georgian Bay, and one thing, naturally led to another, with members of both teams ending up in the bay. Dubeau would like to thank all the loyal fans and all the players for their support of the games. Canter Call riders strut their stuff . Royal Rhythm - Michele Lackie 3.
