SCOUTING AROUND / SCOUTS CANADA A camp fire yarn by Robin Nutbrown "Pioneers are men who go ahead to open up a way in the jungles or elsewhere for those coming after them."' (Seouting for Boys) This is the sentence with which Baden Powell opens his camp fire yarn on the subject of Pioneering. He then goes on to talk about knot-tying, hut- building, felling trees, bridging and so on. Baden-Powell had certain reasons why pioneering practices are i part of training boys, and to point out to be inclined to suggest to Scouters that in addition to the technical details of knotting, lashing, anchorages, etc. there is an educative value in pioneering since it gives elementary training in stresses, mensuration, etc., and also develops initiative, resourcef- ulness and so on out of local material. It also gives practice in team work and discipline."' A leader's efforts should be chiefly directed to the training of the character of his Scouters the value of boys. This is the such practices in primary job of training their boys. So now it is time to start and plan our fall activities. Again this year the Program of "Enjoying Your Pre-schooler" will be available to parents with very young children. This will be the third year for this program which in itself says a great deal for the ex- cellence of this program. For newcomers and new parents let me explain what this excellent program's ob- jectives are and what it can do for you and your child. 1. Ithelps parents to be informed of normal, expected behaviour of toddlers like child development. 2. To encourage parents to deal with ex- pected and unexpected problems of toddlers in constructive ways. 3. To encourage parents to use one another as support and as a resource in problem solving. 4. To illustrate to parents and their children ways of spending time together and activities which can be enjoyable to both. 5. To encourage parents to allow their children to explore their environments in- dependently where possible. 6. To encourage parents to discover ways of deriving enjoyment from their children. A qualified Resource Person directs discussions around a special theme for the day, informing or supplying mothers with information regarding the themes and reinforces the theme in the \group and in the activities. \ The Resource Person has solid training and experiences in child psychology, child development and good ideas of child management. ; The actual running of the program is done by the "Activity Leader'? who leads and develops all the actual activities. Team work = and leadership are em- phasized as not only valuable but essential one learns also the truth of the maxim, "more haste less speed" and realizes the value of SMonovan's patience and_ the necessity for making a through job of lashing, say instead of just trusting to luck. As Baden Powell says: "To. tie a knot seems to be a simple thing, and yet there are right ways and wrong ways of doing it, and Scouts ought to know the right way. Very often it may happen lives depend on a knot being properly tied." These, and many other lessons, are learned very quickly and thoroughly when they come to tackle any real pioneering job. Some will argue that pioneering will have no use to them in the future but in fact without them knowing, they are being fitted out to be self- reliant, to tackle anything with a high SPORTchalet PRESENTS ALE STARTS 9a.m. SHARP!
