Deputations hammer councillors It was wall to wall people Monday night when members of Midland council met for one of their regular monthly meetings. Although the agenda was light the meeting went into overtime when a total of six deputations showed up to address council. The first deputation asked council to support a Terry Fox Day - Sept. 14 to be hosted by McDonalds. The day would feature a six-mile run-a-thon from the YMCA. (See sport pages for more details). Since the event would be travelling over the same route as previous run-a-thons both the town's fire and police chiefs were in favor of the event as were members of council. Fire hydrants The next deputation led by Mrs. Huvers,a resident of Smith's Mobile Home Park, pressed council to put on some pressure on the owner of the mobile home park to provide fire hydrants within the park and as well to increase water pressure there. Mrs. Huvers listed events leading up to Monday night's meeting citing sessions she had had previously with council members. She also reviewed minutes of local PUC meetings that had also unsuccessfully dealt with the matter. Mrs. Huvers indicated she was speaking on behalf of a mobile home owners association at the park. i However this newspaper has since learned that a petition is being circulated in the park which now bears the names of between 50 and 75 per cent of mobile park home owners at Smith's op- posed to the association and the methods it is using. Mrs. Huvers' was advised, since the park was a private operation council's hands were tied as to forcing the park's owners to provide more water pressure or fire hydrants. Meeting It was finally agreed all parties would meet Sept. 30 to thrash out the subject again. In the meantime Fire Chief Terry Lethbridge said he has met with Rick Smith, owner of the park, and was told by Smith he plans to put in 'dry hydrants"' that can be fed from a hydrant on King Street. Mrs. Huvers said that wasn't good enough and that ratepayers in the park were still unhappy with low water pressure there. She cited an increase in the number of mobile homes going into the park and suggested council stop this until the above matter is resolved. Again she was told it wasn't the town's position to force such a stoppage. Alderman Richard Platt Suggested ratepayers withhold their monthly rent until things at Smith's im- proved. Bylaw Meanwhile a third deputation to address council, a Mrs. Therrien from Sixth Street pleaded with council to change its anti-noise bylaw. Mrs. Therrien and her husband were recently charged as ,a result of a complaint laid against them by a neighbour. The couple has been refurbishing their home which was gutted by fire some time ago. Apparently noise caused by cutting of stone prompted the complaint, and the Arthritis Week This is knot the time Midland firemen Tom Toole, foreground, and Peter Grigg, were given the duty of raising the flag for Arthritis month above the Midland Library in a ceremony held Friday. Canvassing for the month of September will be the means of raising funds in the campaign. Page 2, Wednesday, September 10, 1980 subsequent charge. Mrs. Therrien felt the 6 p.m. deadline was unfair and that people wishing to work around their homes after that hour should be allowed to do so. Mayor Moreland Lynn was surprised the couple had been charged. He said he spent the first four years of his life at that address and wished the home-owners luck in the future. The matter is to be reviewed again. An official from the CCBU (Concerned Citizens for Bilingual Unity) devoted almost an hour (even though there was to have been a 10 minute deadline) to blasting council for not including the so-called French high school issue on the Nov. 10, 1980 ballot. Time and again she was told the matter was WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO LIMIT QUANTITIES not one which fell under the town's jurisdiction. When told 21 Simcoe County municipalities plan to put the question on this year's ballot, that 12 don't and one other hasn't made a decision, Alderman Richard Platt again told his listeners amid boos and snide remarks, he wouldn't want the school board to tell the town where to place a road. It was finally agreed to seek legal advice and if the town can legally place the item on the ballot it will. However, again Alderman Platt rose to emphasize he was certain the town would be told it had no right to place the question on the ballot, "since it is not a municipal matter."' Then came an official from the New Apostolic Church who pleaded with council to allow his church to build ona site rescinded a bylaw it owns east of King which would have Street. allowed the church to proceed. Deaf ears And a_ developer His pleas again fellon approached council to deaf ears and later in ask that the town's the meeting council height restriction bylaw be amended so that his firm could proceed with plans to build a huge motel complex just north of Bayshore Drive. Approval was granted later the same night.
