| Poisonous plants' truth told to 'green thumbs' me IK by Ken Regan Town Hall in Penetanguishene was the scene this week of a special _ presentation, sponsored by _ the Penetanguishene _br- anch of the _ Hor- ticultural Society. ; Jack Lord of the Royal Botanical Gar- dens provided a slide presentation and lecture about poisonous plants, many of which are found in the home. The evening got underway, with Lord giving a brief ex- planation of the several chemical compounds plants use to poison and the symptoms they produce. This was followed by the slide show which was accompanied by Lord's commentary on each plant as it was displayed on the screen. Information In his commentary, Lord gave information about each plant such as where it is most often found, as well as a description of _ it's poisonous parts and the consequences, (often gruesome, if not fatal), when poisoning should occur. Some of the =more common plants men- tioned by the speaker were: Philodendron, which can cause painful and serious burning sensations if ingested; English Ivy, which can produce symptoms ranging from nausea and diarrhoea to possible coma; and Oleander, which is an absolute' killer, prompting the authorities of the State of Florida where it is Early detection of cancer up to you! A study by the National Cancer Institute shows that one in 13 woman can expect to develop breast cancer in her lifetime. 'fhe breast self-examination is one of the simplest! steps toward early detection of breast cancer and hence the best way of increasing the chances of complete cure. At present, about one third of cancer deaths could be avoided by early detection and treatment. A breast self-examination requires only a mirror, a lamp and about 10 minutes of time a month. The proper technique can be easily shown by any physician during any check up. Warming signals include a lump or thickening of the breast, with or without pain; discharge from nipples or pain in the breast unrelated to menstruation. In fact, 85 per cent of lumps in the breast are not cancer but if a lump is found, women should see a physician and have a thorough examination. High risk groups for breast cancer include women in age from 40 to 74 years and women with heavy breasts or breasts with prominent ducts. hi The primary responsibility for protection against breast cancer lies with each woman individually. As the Cancer Society's slogan states, "'It's up to you." TENDERS most common to post warnings about it. Another _ interesting point mentioned by Lord, was there are no government regulations requiring retailers of plants and bulbs to indicate possible irritant or poisonous properties the mer- chandise may have. That is a situation which undoubtedly contributes to the general public's lack of knowledge about plant poisons. The presentation ended with Lord outlining key steps individuals can take to reduce the risk of plant was; to treat plants, both in the wild and in the home with the same respect that would be given common household chemicals.
