St. Theresa's Crusaders to face tough competition played in the Midland Midland's Ste Theresa's High School's Crusaders senior boys' team will come up against some pretty tough competition Friday when they meet Kapuskasing Kolts from Kapuskasing Secondary ~_ Bulls fail in bid to win two in row by Doug Reed Midland Bulls Rugger Club, playing short- handed last Saturday, failed in the club's bid to make it two wins in a row after visiting Barrie Rugby Club shut out Bulls 14-nil. Win for Barrie, consisting of mostly highschoolers from Eastview Collegiate, | came on three tries and a convert. The 35-minute-halfs game opened with Bulls fielding 14 players instead of the usual Gy With less than five minutes played, Barrie opened the scoring on a short 15-yard run by Joe Qunito. Barrie's convert failed and it was 4-0 for visitors. Seconds later Midland's Mark Sullivan dislocated his shoulder and was rushed to hospital leaving the home team to battle Barrie 13 men to 15. Visitors Before the first half was over Barrie scored again when visitors wheeled their scrum just a few feet from Midland's goal line to make it 8-0. Again Barrie failed to click on a two-point conversion and it was 8-0 at the end of the first half for Barrie. Midland then took it to Barrie in the second half although were unable to get on the scoreboard even when the club took a three- point penalty kick which missed the mark. Reese Caville made it 14-0 for Barrie, after he ran the ball in for a try (four points) and then completed the scoring with a conversion that was good. Early in the last period John Gibson dressed for Bulls, the club playing the remainder of the game shy only one player on the field. Barrie's young legs seemed to tell the story for most of the match and for a time it ap- peared they would walk away with the match until Midland started to put some of its own pressure on visitors. Both clubs were evenly matched with their packs (scrums) while Bulls' malls and rucks (grounding the ball) saved visitors from adding to the score. Several Midland three-quarter line runs (players passing the ball then peeling off) excited fans who watched the match played in almost ideal weather. Brothers Bill Chapman and the Josland brothers, Mike and Steve, played aggressive rugger for Bulls as did Al MacDonald, John Nix, Ralph Leuthardt and Ron Hunt. Hunt played one of the best games of his career with some sparkling long distance running. He also provided bone-crushing tackling to boot. Bulls' lineout plays were varied which kept Barrie off guard for most of the game. Nevertheless Barrie pulled off an impressive victory and is to be credited with some fine ball-handling and excellent coaching. Next Saturday, Midland Bulls head to' Sudbury and then a week from Saturday they'll be back in action-on the pitch at Midland Secondary School for a clash with Brock of Cannington. One final note concerning last Saturday afternoon's game, Midland's Mike Miller was called upon to officiate the affair and he's credited with refereeing a well officiated game. A check for roughly $7,000 was presented to Clarence _ Rittenhaus, chairman for the local chapter of the Cancer Society in an assembly at the school Thursday afternoon. Another $1,000 was outstanding in-pledges at that time. _ Page 22, Wednesday, September 24, 1980 School. The Kolts were semi- finalists at OFSSA for the past three or four years.
