The vintage cars attracted plenty of attention both at the plaza and later as they headed out on area highways. by Terry Dupuis Many film goers fondly remember last year's BREAKING AWAY. It turned out to be the sleeper of 1979. It was a modestly budgeted picture without any big names in the cast, but it ended up winning many Academy Award nominations and it was a big hit at the box-office. I've just seen what I think will be this year's equivalent of BREAKING AWAY. It's called MY BODYGUARD. Once again, a modest budget and no strong box-office names have put many of this summer's high- budget. big cast pictures to shame. MY BODYGUARD has been drawing \rave reviews from critics, but what will be even more instrumental to the film's success will be the word of mouth from pleased patrons. A 15-year old Toronto Jarvis Collegiate student named Chris Makepease made his screen debut last year in MEATBALLS. In MY BODYGUARD he has the top role. He plays a student named Clifford Peach who attends his first public high school after nine years in a private academy. The culture shock to young Clifford is enormous, to say the least. ea: He finds himself bullied by campus hooligans, who run a protection racket. The ringleader is a smart-aleck kid named Moodv. This role is well-played by a young actor named Matt Dillon, who was seen last summer in another film release called LITTLE DARLINGS. Clifford devises a unique solution to his problem by enlisting the help of a bodyguard. He hires the biggest kid My Bodyguard draws rave reviews in the school, a silent giant youth whom evervone else is afraid of. Clifford tries to become friends with this boy. about whom the students engage in whispered rumours. One kid tells Clifford that this boy raped a teacher; another story is that he killed a guy. The bodyguard rejects Clif- ford's attempts at friendship, but Clifford is persistent. Finally he learns the secret behind the other boy's loneliness. For sheer entertainment, MY BODYGUARD would rate on top of my list for this summer, along with THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and BRUBAKER. It is also extremely well-acted by all concerned. Chris Makepeace is very engaging as the shy new boy Cliffie. And Matt Dillon makes a terrific unlikeable heavy as Moody. A new actor named Adam Baldwin is introduced in this picture as the boy guard of the title, and he gives a most intriguing performance. More is certain to be heard of him in the future. The adult characters in MY BODYGUARD take a back seat to the young people, but the parts are still well-played. Martin Mull is Clifford's father, a harried hotel manager. 80 year old Ruth Gordon is Clifford's eccentric grandmother. And John Hauseman makes a brief appearance as Mr. Dobbs, an important guest who is staying at the _ hotel. MY BODYGUARD is a movie which falls into the realm of youth-oriented comedy- dramas. But it's appeal is certainly not limited to young people. I think moviegoers of any age will genuinely enjoy it. It was also a year they thanked God and Canadian forces for the liberation which has returned Holland to the flower showplace of Europe. In 1980, 35 years after Canadian Forces marched across what were the soggy fields of Holland, the Dutch are saying thank you as its never been said before.
