mega ne Zone 5meeting Local hunters, anglers conservation-conscious by Charlie Noquet Georgian Bay Hunters and Anglers in hosting the third quarterly meeting of Zone 5 of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters last Sunday en- tertained delegates from nearly a dozen other conservation clubs during the lengthy conclave. Delegates attending the morning afternoon business sessions registered ' from such conservation - conscious areas as Owen Sound, Barrie, Orillia, Peter- boro. Schomberg, Oshawa, Hamilton, Toronto, Collingwood and Midland. Zone 5 - one of six zones designated by the OFAH - comprises of a large area stretching from Lake Ontario in the south to an area just south of North Bay in the north. From east to west it embraces an area just east of Peterboro across the province to the eastern half of the Georgian Bay sector. Zone 5 first vice-president, Ed Harper of Alliston, in opening the early morning meeting emphasized at the federation was facing a real problem in its com- munication system. Mail service "We depend mainly on mail service to spread the word on meetings and of business conducted during these meetings. And lately, to be frank, the mail service has been very tardy in- deed." he stressed. Zone chairman George McQuarrie of Toronto, in his opening remarks as chairman of the meeting, suggested that maybe a solution to this problem would be the publication of a Zone 5 tabloid newspaper which could be delivered to the various areas via a courier system. Present system of communication is via a newsletter delivered through mail service. Co-operation between the OF AH zones themselves and also with other various conservation organizations was another topic dwelt on during the morning session by McQuarrie. "While we do not all have the same views and goals, we certainly all care about the same things," he emphasized. A report by Emil Schuch, chairman of the membership committee, revealed that three new clubs had been enrolled recently in Zone 5. They were the Mississauga Conservation Club; the Browning Island Hunt Club from the Metro Toronto area and the Bluewater Fishing and Hunting Club from the Moon River Basin area. Included in motions discussed and passed without dissent was one to set a fixed date and place for the OFAH - sponsored Annual Black Powder Shoot. Delegates Hosted this year very successfully by the Barrie District Hunters and Anglers Conservation Club, it was unanimously agreed by the delegates that the Barrie club should be designated as the per- manent site for this annual shoot. Included in resolutions discussed and passed was one proposed by the Bluewater Fishing and Hunting Club that the Ministry of Natural Resources be approached to declare the Moon River Basin area as a year-round fish sanc- tuarv and that a previously proposed grant for enlargement of spawning grounds for fish be provided. Highlighting the afternoon session was the nominations for the four-member Zone 5 executive posts and the presen- tation of trophies won at a recent OFAH - sponsored shoot. Re-nominated for the zone chairma? and the first vice-chairman positions, respectively, were incumbent members, George McQuarrie and Ed Harper. Ivan Tees of the Islington Sportsmen Club was the lone nominee for the dual secretary - treasurer role while the selection for a second vice-chairman was held in abeyance for the present time. Trophies awarded during the afternoon meeting went to Al Wallace of the Kemble Gun Club for Individual High Score: to Renate Schuch of the Toronto Hubertus Club for Ladies' High Score and to Chris DeBert of Sydneham Sportsmen Association of Owen Sound, for Junior High Score. The sharp-shooting Al Wallace was also a member of the Kemble Gun Club quintet which captured the team Shoot Trophy. Other members of this winning team were Ed Graham, Wm McNeil, Wm Beckett and Henrrich Nobbe. To rezone? Rounding out the day's discussion period was a proposal to rezone the present six OFAH zones. Most of the delegates present were not in favour of this proposal which would have divided the current boundaries of Zone 5 however. Which in turn prompted chairman McQuarrie in his closing remark to counsel the delegates - "No matter where our boundaries lie, let's get everyone within this zone involved in its operation." Also in attendance at the meeting in a spectator role was Alex Smith, Fish and Wildlife Supervisor in the Huronia District for the Ministry~of Natural Resources. Whose got the ball? Ray Brien of Midland finds it a little difficult to hold onto the ball in the tryouts for the Midland team of Simcoe County's Intermediate Men's Basketball -- League. Pat Hahn, Mark Pumputis, and Matt Karwacky were very impressive on defence. The team's next game will be at the Midland field with the visiting team coming from Collingwood Collegiate Institute. The game will begin at 3 p.m. The Bulls will ex- perience better times now that they have some young players to boost the strength of the team.
