Pickets hit Midland bricks Except for Postal Service all federal government operations in Canada including here in Midland slowed down or all but came to a stand still Monday. Picket Lines were thrown up around the federal building in Midland as a result of a national strike by 50,000 government clerks and regulatory employees. It is expected the mail will continue to flow because of an agreement hammered out between representatives of the postal union and the Public Service Alliance of Canada and its 180,000 members. This newspaper received a copy of a press release which was being handed out in Midland by those manning the picket line here. The following is the text of the release: "The reason federal government clerks are out on strike is that they can no longer afford to take smaller than the cost of living pay settlements.", "This is not a strike against the public and we sincerely apologize for the distress caused to many people -- but we must make our position known to treasury board." 'We are not trying to get rich just to keep up with the cost of living. "Our wage request was 10 per cent effective November 12, 1979 (date our contract ran out) and 9 per cent effective Nov. 12, 1980."' "We further requested a 2614 hour work week. Treasury Board's reaction was that this demand was '"'too Rich'. "They counter offered 7 per eent effective Nov. 12, 1979 - 2 per cent effective May 12, 1980. 7 per cent effective Nov. 12, 1980 - 2 per cent effective May 12, 1981. "This is below the rate of inflation and an unfair wage offer." "The average wage of a federal govern- ment clerk is between $10,000 - $12,000 per year. Working single parents and those of us with dependent families are finding it im- possible to manage in this time of double digit inflation."' "We want the Government to force Treasury Board to mediate a just decision in this matter as soon as possible.' "We wish to sincerely thank members of the public and co-workers who have ex- pressed support for our cause."
