Tiny aat Tay feel wrath of TITPPB by Ken Regan The Sept. 25 meeting of the Tiny-Tay Area Planning Board, held in Penetanguishene coun- cil chambers, was the scene of some angry discussion about Tiny and Tay's decision, announced that evening to withdraw from the area board. Furthermore, it was a session at which several members of the board vented their anger and frustration over what they felt, in the words of one member, was a "short sighted and stupid" decision by Tiny and Tay members. Discussion When the floor was opened for discussion on the matter, Forbes Mackenzie led off by saying he had several questions about those sitting as represen- tatives on Tiny Council and. Tiny lanning Board, excluding Dr. Brasher who'd reluc- tantly withdrawn from participating in the meeting. Mackenzie asked in a rhetorical tone, '"'Have we got two or three members on _ that planning board and the council who are going to destroy the en- vironment for. our children and grand- children? Because I think we _ have....That question comes into my mind: why do they want to destroy that plan?" Continuing his remarks, Mackenzie referred to correspondence from Tay. saying, "as a ratepayer and a citizen and a resident of Tay Township, I have never been so embarrassed by my council...as I am tonight. Because we, the citizens of Tay Township have put in a puppet government. They cannot think for themselves." Mackenzie went on to question why Tay, after their Reeve having said in August "they had a plan they could live with", would '"'come in September and say Tiny have rejected it, so we have too. This does not make sense to me." He went on _ to reiterate that he was ashamed at having been a Tay ratepayer who'd contributed to putting those representatives in power and then said, "But I sure as hell won't have a hand in putting them in there this year." Following the con- clusion of Mackenzie's comments, Midland's Richard Platt spoke. Stating his disap- pointment and saying though he harboured some skepticism, he had felt Tiny and Tay had wanted an official plan. Then he said, "It's obvious now they didn't _ want it...I think it's a sad, sad commentry...to let this drag on without having the intestinal fortitude...to say they didn't want an official plan. What's happened (is) they've just strung us along for six or nine months hoping it would somehow die, but when it didn't die, now they've decided they have to kill it directly." Platt then exhorted the remaining board members to "have enough guts to stand up...and send the plan back to the Ministry...and let the Ministry judge it on its merits." Sadness Ray Baker, of Penetanguishene, then took the floor and registered his sadness and disappointment with Tiny-Tay's move and referring to the Area Plan as_ the culmination of 60 years combined work, (6 municipalities, 10 years work), he stated"as a person, I'm very sad that this has happened, (considering) all the collective good work." Moreland Lynn of Midland took over from Baker and opened with several minutes of praise for Dr. Brasher and the zeal _ he exhibited in performing his part in developing the plan. Then Lynn alluded to the Tiny-Tay decision as "earthquake" effect where a fissure opens up in the earth and added, "erhaps the fissure will close and eliminate from further bother and expense the two municipalities | which have this evening declared their in- tentions."' He went on to say he found it rather humourous the two townships would ask the remaining members to hold in abeyance, matters pertaining to the plan. "They have' ab- solutely no right at this stage to...in any way, as far as I'm concerned, to even suggest to us what we should do,"' he said. Penetanguishene Mayor, Gil Robillard. "T'm really dumb- founded," said Robillard. "T really can't grasp it at all." Speaking of the work that had been ac- complished to date and referring to his own personal good feelings about the prospect of agreement on the plan he said "I hate to think we haven't made progress, and I think we have made a lot of progress."' But he added, "You may thinkeverybody's behind you, you may have a really good feeling, but you turn around and_ there's nobody there."'
