we - Mayor's term in office reviewed before members of Y's Men's Club by Ken Regan Mayor Moreland Lynn of Midland was guest of honour at a meeting of the Y's Men's Club, at YMCA in Midland on Tuesday. The mayor, following dinner, presented a speech which could best be described as a pre-election rundown. Following his opening congratulatory remarks to members present on their fine new building, the mayor went on to provide a brief summary of his first 45 months as mayor, after discussing the many changes 'which have taken place during his term he followed with a summary of things that he sees as areas of concern and projections for the future of Midland. Growth In the area of what has taken place during his term, Lynn mentioned specific growth indicators such as a new arena, a new YMCA, the start of a new sewage treatment plan & establishment of formal relations with outlying municipalities. On the topic of conerns and new directions, the mayor of Midland mentioned some of the less visible changes taking place now which will have their impact in the future. For example, he spoke positively of revisions of the municipality's administrative system, in an effort to reduce red tape. Specifically, he talked about the reduction from four wards in Midland each with their own councillor, to two wards with three councillors each. Development The area of industrial development was one area of concern mentioned and Lynn stated the problem there as being competition against communities from all over Canada and Europe. "If Midland wants to advance in that area," he said, "we should establish and maintain a presence." In a question and answer period after his speech Lynn fielded questions on subjects ranging from the status of the Tiny-Tay Peninsula Planning Board, to what the municipality of Midland was doing to regain its share of the tourist market. Concerning the Tiny-Tay issue, he said, since their withdrawal must yet be approved by the Ministry of Housing, the two townships are still technically part of the TTPPB. With reference to the tourist question, Lynn stated getting back into the tourist market is very important to Midland at this juncture in history. He added the place Midland can make (a developmental) impact, is on the waterfront. But he said, "we're not packaging the product properly and...this is an area we need to capture." Mayor address Y's Moreland Lynn, mayor of Midland was guest of honour at a meeting of Midland Y's Men's Club on Tuesday. He is shown here presenting part of a speech in which he described Men's Club Midland's growth during his term and stated his concerns and hopes for the town's future. Revised area plan in the mail Platt anticipates townships' explanation --_ Midland Alderman Richard Platt is looking forward to seeing Tiny and Tay Townships' lists of objections to an area plan which the two townships had a large part in rewriting. The alderman made the comment during Tuesday evening's special meeting of Midland council. He is one of Midland's representatives on the six-municipality member Tiny-Tay Peninsula Planning Board (TTPPB). Tuesday evening Midland council voted to accept the modified area plan. After 10 years the plan is on its way to the Ministry of Housing. Tiny Tay, Platt said, will be requested by the ministry to state their objections to the plan. He expects the two townships' criticism of a plan which they had considerable freedom in rewriting since last Christmas will be "a very interesting and enlightening exercise." No dissent Platt complained to the rest of Midland council Tuesday that in July the revised area plan was endorsed by representatives of all of - TORK AY: 'AN, Contracting Contracting the affected municipalities who make up the TTPPB. There was no dissent, he added. After the July meeting the revised area plan was sent to the councils of the six municipalities for their individual approval. The schedule then called for the councils to indicate their response to Midland council, and for Midland council to forward the revised plan to the Ministry of Housing. Plan He complained that Tay Reeve Charlie Rawson, who, Platt said, claimed in July that Services the area plan "seemed to be a plan we all can live with," two months later followed Tiny's example and withdrew ftom the area 'plan- ning board. In hand Tuesday night were notices from Penetanguishene and Port McNicol] to the effect that their councils approved of the plan. Midland approved the plan Tuesday evening. Victoria Harbour has put its deliberation over to its next meeting, Oct. 14. Tiny and Tay are other member municipalities of the TTPBB.
