Hunters up to get bird by Brian Berriault On the whole good duck hunting weather held up during the last couple of weeks. Opening day was ideal for those of us not spending the night shivering in some pond or marsh. Many hunters see this over night slumber party as a way of controlling hunters who may enter onto their privately staked-out hunting area. However, early morning always manage to find a few extra bodies swinging a barrel skywards. _ Next year (although swearing never to spend another night sleeping on a marsh or pond) they'll be back in the sack shivering with opening day anticipation or cold. Ducks Success was good from all reports heard. Plenty of ducks are still winging about in our area. Geese have started their southern migration from northern Ontario which means bay ducks will also be showing their beaks in our area soon. There are still plenty of good hunting days left in fact the best is yet to come now that opening day has been overcome. Many fair-weather hunters will return to their beds rather than chance those frosty *morning outings. They've had their one-day fling at duck hunting and will now lay comfortably in bed while real duck hunters head afield for the best hunts of the year. Brain wave As I quietly sat in Wye Marsh opening day I couldn't help but come up with a suggestion for a far sighted electronic genious. I have often wondered with our modern day technology why someone hasn't invented a gun sight that would control trigger mechanisms on shotguns. An electronic eye could be set at say 50 yards. When the gun is pointed at game beyond this range triggers would automatically freeze. I can picture the frustration of a few hun- ters who think shotguns have limitless range. Shell companies would be furious of course at the loss of revenue and some hunters would never get a shot since a few seldom shoot at ducks within range. Safety course Alas every opening day passes and a few would be hunters get the urge to get out and hunt. However many have never held a licence before. A gun safety course is a must for those under twenty years of age and should be considered by anyone over that age at- tempting to obtain their first gun licence. Presently courses can be taken from in- structor Steve Quaife from Midland. There are a few openings in the course starting on Oct. 13. Courses last approximately a week and start at 7 p.m. and end at roughly 9:30 p.m. Elmira gals beat MISS in finals Midland Secondary School's senior girls basketball team seems to be coming up against a brick wall every time the local gals meet their counterparts from Elmira. MSS lost in the Grey- Bruce Tournament in Meaford over the weekend to Elmira in the finals. The team played well, winning against Owen Sound Collegiate 34-21 in a game in which Tracy Vent scored 16 points. Defense was the name of the game in the second round against Listowel. Midland won the game 32-9 with Angie Pumputis scoring 14 points. The third game against Elmira was a close one, ending in a 36- 33 loss for the Midland team. The loss represents the second tournament in a row that the senior girls have lost in the finals to Elmira. This, in no way, detracts from their play and they deserve a great deal of credit for their performance.
