Page 8, Wednesday, October 8, 1980 Supply of Big Brothers always low ...can you help? by Don Lawrence Big Brothers' of Midland celebrated the end of a successful Big Brothers Week, Sunday in their new office at McGuire House in Penetanguishene. Members from the Midland-Penetangui- shene area attended a wine and cheese party which officially opened the office. Dan Downey, president of the Midland-Penetangui- shene chapter of the organization says that 12-13 prospective big brothers were reached because of the week. Thirty-two are still needed for proper matches in the im- mediate area. The Big Brothers have been in the area for approximately seven years and now operate with the help of a 12 member board and 20 big brothers. Their aim is to double the number of big brothers before the end of the year. Memberships for the organization will be sold soon at the price of $2. A monthly meeting will be held which the public are welcome to attend. The public may obtaing more information at these meetings once thev have been scheduled. It takes about a month for an application to be processed for a new big brother. Office Also sharing the office will be the Good Parenting group, which has been in the area for three vears. They have 10 board members and 15 af- filiated groups. The group operates five '"'young year place centers", located in Waubashene, Port MeNicoll, Wyebridge, Regent St. School in Midland and the Salvation Army office in Midland. The sixth center will run out of"McGuire Heo ibes) ce ion Penetanguishene. Facilities include a reading library, con- taining books on good parenting and programs such as Systematic Training for Effective Parenting. The program will run on Wednesday nights in Bavview School in Midland from 7-9 p.m. and is aimed at helping parents of children aged 3-13 understand their childrens' needs. The program will run for a length of 19 weeks. Another program is the drug safety program, run by Dr. Jim. Martin of Midland and will begin the last Tuesday in Oct.
