College forms French advisory committee Board of Governors of Georgian College has formed an Advisory Committee to counsel the College on its development of French programs, both in French as a first language and also as a second language. Ministry of Colleges and Universities has been most supportive of Georgian College and its response to the francophone needs and the courses already mounted by the College. Donald D'Aoust, principal of the Separate School Board's new French Elementary School in Penetanguishene, was elected Chairman of this Comite consultatif de Langue francaise du College Georgian. Agreement was unanimous that the French name for the Committee be continued throughout. Students It is expected that Georgian College students will have the opportunity of having some courses presented in French so as to better prepare them for employment. Investigation of potential program areas for French instruction is currently underway. Besides the members of the College Administrative staff, the Comite consultatif is ESPSS Report formed of members from a wide variety of backgrounds and experience. Members from the community include: Ginette Bailey, Nancy Clare, Donald D'Aoust, Edmond DeMeulemeester, Roland Desroches, Augustin Desroches, Johannne Dumont, Yvon Gagne, Millie Johne, Normand Lavoie and Ghislaine Shaver. Members of the College Administration include: President Wayne Nusch; Principal and Director, Academic Programs Garth Jackson; Bruce W. Hill, Director of Community Services; Claudette Paquin; David B. Phillips, and Board Member Robbert Hartog. Courses In the past 10 years, Georgian has offered French courses through its Continuing Education Division and French electives have been offered to post secondary students. As well, for the past three years, the College has provided a French Immersion summer workshop for the Ontario Teachers' Federation at the Lake Rosseau School. Beginning this week, there will be regular coverage of both sporting and special events taking place at Ecole Secondaire Penetanguishene Secondary School. Keeping us up-to-date on happenings at the school are Marjory Hammond, a Grade 12 student from Tay Township, and Bev Fitzgerald, a Grade 13 student at the school, also of Tay Township. Marjory, who has aspirations of someday becoming a journalist, will keep you posted on special events taking place at E.S.P.S.S. and Bev will keep tabs on sporting stories. Our thanks go out to the girls for their contributions and we are looking forward to their reports. Sept. 26, was Initiation Day when Grade 9's became of- ficial BeSeh 25.97 students. The theme was 'Cave Men and Cave Women' and costumes made of potato sacks, suede and leopard skin were worn. Some of the honorable senior students' demands _included-sing songs, carrying of books all around school, sweep isle between tables in caf. with whisk-broom, stand on table and do 'Tarzan call'. Kangaroo Court was presided over by Judge Bayfield (a teacher) and offenders charged with impersonating a senior student, refusing to obey a senior student and -abusing the priviledges of a senior student-were tried and sentences given. Drama Department's production of Man A La Mancha is well un- derway with per- formances _ scheduled for Dec. 4, 5 and 6. Phys-Ed department is busy with a number of practices for basketball teams, volleyball teams arid tennis team. One disappointment for many-no football team this year. Bands are practising regularly, preparing for the possible concert in lat November or early December. As a result of all the events, and many extra- curricular activities going on, as well as the usual load of school work, very few students suffer from inactivity.
