It's a social satire in much the same vein as the Blake Edwards comedy 10 which starred Dudlev Moore as a just-over-40 composer. Moore gave an incredibly funny performance in that role. Middle Age Crazy concerns a Houston architect who turns 40, and the role is played by Bruce Dern. The startling thing is how well he does in a role which you would expect him to be completely miscast for. It's an example of how effective casting against type can! be, much like The Boys From Brazil, in which the film was sparked by usually good guy Gregory Peck portraying a vicious Nazi war criminal. Dern's image throughout his career has been the opposite of Peck. Dern has been continuously typecast 'throughout his career as a psychotic. His roles are usually vicious and nasty. Many filmgoers still remember him as the guy who shot Join Wayne in the back in The Cowhoys. Dern's'horsey face and whiney voice have tended te make him ideally suited for those types of roles. It therefore has come as quite a surprise to moviegoers and critics to see how brilliantly Bruce Dern has been able to reverse his image in Middle Age Crazy. Gone are the squintv mean eyes, the cruel mouth and the tremulous voice. All these mannerisms are gone in Bobby Lee, a 40-year-old architect, who is a devoted family man. But a lot of people are leaning on Bobby Lee. and at 40 he finds the pressure is becoming too much. He has problems with his son who doesn't want to go to college; his wife constantly insists on making love; his father dies. and his mother moves in with them. A pushv Texas millionaire client is constantly putting business pressure on him. As anescape, Bobby Lee starts to fantasize, much like George the composer did in 10. Then he attempts to turn the dream into a reality, as he trades in his Olds and buys a $40,000 Porsche, and throws out his gray businessman's suit in favour of a cowboy outfit. And he does all manner of other strange things, as he goes "middle age crazy"'. The movie pokes fun at the idiocy which some men at this age indulge in to offset the pressure of their lives. Although Middle Age Crazy is definitely Dern's movie, there are still some good supporting performances. I think Ann-Margaret needed stronger direction as Bobby Lee's wife Sue Ann, but Graham Jarvis is terrific as Dern's long-time buddv. and Toronto actor Geoffrey Bowes is also fine as Dern's and Margaret's teenage son. Last year Bowes played Prince Calvin in Hazelton Motion Picture's production of Something's Rotten.
