Sixtv percent of the candidates running for the position of Simcoe County Board of Education trustee who answered a survey said a trustee ought to be more concerned with improving the quality of education than con- trolling inflation when making budget decisions. Sixteen of 30 can- didates surveyed by the Simcoe County chapter of the Ontario Public School Men Teachers' Federation returned the survey. Respondents Seven of respondents are in- cumbents; the other nine are seeking office. A decrease in the size of the average class was favoured by 73 percent of respondents. All agreed that all students should have equal access to facilities, such as gymnasiums and libraries, and programmes, such as music. the Education: Nearly all, 85 percent, agreed that the general public and classroom teachers should be allowed to contribute to the making of board poliev decisions. Trustee Ninety-three percent said trustees should visit schools to meet personnel and_ to familiarize themselves with programmes. Teachers should be teachers rather than administrators and clerks. 76 percent said. Respondents were almost equally divided between saying teachers could be freed to teach by cutting back the paperwork they must do, and saying thev should be given assistance. Slightly less than half said trustees should interview all qualified applicants for positions of responsibility. Ninety-three percent agreed that the province should help boards of education to find better means of paying for educational services than relying on property taxes. Importance Class size, declining enrolment, and curriculum develop- ment were given equal importance. Each received 54 percent outweighs cost, majority of candidates say when quizzed approval. Public relations is the area needing most improvement, 75 per- cent said. Class and equalization comes next. with 56 percent. He mentioned that several automobiles had been marked up on 'chalk night' in Penetanguishene, but other than the usual liquor offences and disturbance calls, things were very quiet.
