Travel News, Views Rio -- more thana sandy beach by Carol Crawford If I have ever been to a city that was built for the enjoyment of its citizens it has to be Rio De Janeiro. With a population of over 7,000,000 the city is very clean and the beaches are also well kept. There is a wide boardwalk along each beach area and everyone appears to be very keen on physical fitness. You see people jogging everywhere and all sorts of equipment such as parallel bars are in areas by the beach for people to work out on. Dining out can be an evenings en- tertainment in itself and a very good value. Shopping can be enjoyed in the early evening. You have your choice of large malls or small boutiques and when you feel like a local drink to help you along there is always an outside cafe not far away. Sugar Loaf Mountain offers an excellent view of the city but more exciting yet is the train ride to the statue of Christ, the Redeemer. Lush, green, mountainous and exciting. Rio is truly breathtaking, a destination to be put on the first of your list if you are looking for a change. New York Transfer If vou have travel plans that require a transfer of airports in New York don't let it bother you. There is an excellent bus system between Laguardia Airport and J. F. Kennedy which is approximately $3 US and leaves regularly. As J. F. Kennedy is also very large a bus is available from terminal to terminal at a cost! of .75 cents each. As drug traffic is heavy into this city you may also be stopped by the custom's office where your luggage can be searched. I must admit this can be very annoying but considering they catch one in five traffickers you can understand the need for it. Collingwood trio faces An early morning incident at the Com- modore Hotel in Penetanguishene has resulted in several charges being laid by Penetanguishene police and by Midland O.P.P. At 12:50 a.m., Wed- nesday, Nov. 12, PPD was called to the Commodore to _ in- vestigate an incident. Upon arrival, they learned that three persons had stolen a couple of pictures from the hotel and jumped in a car to make their escape. In the process of doing so, the driver of the getaway vehicle struck Murray Guthrie, 21, of Wyebridge, fracturing his left leg and con- tinued the escape, southbound on Main Stree. Penetanguishene Police reported the vehicle direction and licence number to Midland O.P.P. and shortly thereafter, the Midland squad had apprehended the car, a '74 Duster, and the three occupants along with the stolen goods, on many charges Balm Beach Road. Midland O.P.P. charged the driver of the. car, 21-year-old Michael Johnson, of 450 Ontario St., Collingwood, with impaired driving and excess alcohol. Johnson was also charged with having liquor in the vehicle. At that time, all subjects and property were turned over to Penetanguishene police. Constable Claude Monroe of PPD charged 27-year-old Dennis Bowman of 29 Birch St., Collingwood, with theft under $200. and possession of stolen property. Edward Gourley, 21, of the Arlington Hotel, Collingwood, was charged with possession of stolen property. Michael Johnson was. charged with possession of stolen property, and criminal negligence in the operation of a motor vehicle. Court date for the trio is set for Nov. 20, in Penetanguishene. Another season's over House fire probe is continuing A full-scale investigation by Midland fire and police personnel and a representative from the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office is continuing this week into a weekend fire that destroyed a Nelson Street home in town. A hydro inspector has ruled out an elec- trical malfunction, Fire Chief Terry Leth- bridge told this newspaper yesterday. Meanwhile a fire which gutted a Fourth Street home several week's ago was caused by an "'undertermined origin' investigators now say.
