Bears and Colts advance The Bears and the Colts will hit the gridiron next Saturday in Senior Men's Flag Football League following the semi-final games played ai Elmvale District High School field _ last weekend. In the first game of the semi-finals, the first placed Rams faced the third placed Colts for the 12 noon match. The Colts picked up the win in the close match with the final score 26-20. Notching up touch- downs for the Colts were Ike Columbus, Steve Roth. Bob Finlay and Norm Hales. Bob Finlay also added a two point convert to round out the scoring. Rams' Tim McGinnis managed two touch- downs for his team while Dan McLean ran in a single. McGinnis added a two point convert to the Rams list Steelers-Wyevale tie Men's Senior Hockey League action got un- derway Thursday night with closely fought game between Elmvale Steelers and Wyevale. The final outcome was a 2-2 tie between the teams. Both teams played a see-saw battle in the first period but no goals resulted. Scoring did.not come into play until the second period of play when Wyevale's Mike Stoddart found the net at. the 18:33 point. Assisting on the play were Micky Perrault and James Dupuis. Wvevale broadened the margin at the five minute mark of the period when Rick Hill scored on an unassisted play. With only 34 seconds remaining in the middle period, Elmvale MSS students pull together for athletic programs Midland Secondary School's runathon and servathon held recently to raise funds for athletic activities in the school netted them a tiny profit, as reported this week. The total for the two events was $2,200.50, $1,588 of that raised through the servathon. Of that total, $178 was sent to Terry Fox's Cancer Fund on a percentage basis. The school's total is put toward helping finance athletic programs within the school and has already helped to pay for the completion of school bleach ers in the gymnasium. That was done with the aid of Mr. Chisholm's class who put the bleachers together. Also figuring in the construction of the bleachers were Mr. Albert's welding class and Mr. Tanner's class who are painting the bleachers. It was cold? Just ask geese at Little Lake Giant Canada geese iced in earlier this week at Little Lake Park in Midland may have wished they had headed south to Florida a week or two earlier. A number of them got bogged down in ice while taking a refreshing dip in Little Lake. Seems they didn't realize how quickly ice forms on the lake and soon were locked in where they stayed over night until the sun rose the following morning to melt their icy hold and allow them to fly free...asa bird, in this case, free as a brass monkey. managed to score when Bruce Graves hit one home on a pass from Kevin Fleming and Ike Columbus. Wvevale went into the third period with a 2-1 lead. but that lead quickly diminished as Ike Columbus banged one in for Elmvale at the 9:34 point. Assisting Columbus on the play were Bruce Graves and Dan Huggins. of points. Bears down Bulls The next game in the semi-finals saw the second place Bears meet the fourth place Bulls. The Bears picked up a handy win, 30-21 over their opponents. Scoring for the Bears were Pat Ritchie with three touchdown efforts and Mike Fallon with one. Marty Ritchie and Tom McGinnis each managed two point converts. For the Bulls, point- getters were Jeff Columbus with two touchdowns and Frank Thiffault with a single touchdown effort. The. Championship game of the season will be played Saturday, Nov. 22 at the EDHS field. Game time will be 2 pans Foodmasters trounce Perkies The Elmvale Food- masters ran roughshod over the Perkies in Senior League Hockey action last Thursday evening, as the local team trounced Perkinsfield by a score of 16-4. The play looked to be a normal, _ closely matched. effort in the first period as both groups scored only one goal apiece. Food- masters' Mark Archer hit the board first followed by a goal from Perkies' George McCue. Things certainly picked up in the second period of play though, as the Elmvale squad connected .a total of 10 times to take a com- manding lead. Goals were notched up by Del Bertram at 19:39; Dave Jamieson at 15:30; Mark Archer at 11:09; Brian Jamieson at 10:08: Doug McMann at 7:04: Dave Jamieson again at 5:10; Steve Loftus at 3:03; Dan Ritchie at 2:15 and Mike Oetelaar at 1:16. Perkinsfield managed to score a single goal during all this action and that was by Larry Cowan at the 9:15 point of the period. Ron Henderson and George McCue assisted on the play. Elmvale didn't let up the pressure in the final period of play either, as the team managed another five goals to add insult to injury for Perkies players. First on scoreboard in _ this period was Food- masters Dave Jamieson who hit the net at 18:14. Steve Loftus followed up with a point at 16:04 and Brian Jamieson scored at 14:55. the Perkinsfield came out of their slump for a brief time as Larry Cowan again scored for his team at 12:25. Elm- vale's Brian Jamieson knocked in his third of the game and Perkies' Bill Mundy scored the last Perkinsfield point. Elmvale finished the scoring at 4:04 when Mike Oetelaar slapped home the final goal. Total score in the game was 16-4 Foodmasters. Spicer rink wins McLennan Trophy There was lots of action at the Midland Curling Club last Monday as_ several ladies' teams from the Monday and Thursday divisions took part in the Bourgeois Motors' Early Bird Bonspiel, vying for the Captain McLennan trophy. There was a total of eight teams entered in all and when the day long bonspiel was over, the team of Dorothy Spicer (skip), Charlotte Tullv (vice), Kay Lapere (second), and Josephine Mann (lead) was the winning entry. The Spicer team won their trophy by virtue of a win over the team of May Williams, Mamie Moffatt, Ted Robinson and Lori Walker. The Williams team was runner up. The two teams in the finals round got there after defeating their respective opponents in the semi-final round played Monday mor- ning. In that competition, Mav Williams and her girls defeated the Mary Park rink while Dorothy Spicer and her mates beat the Phyllis Bremner team. All in all the bonspiel seemed 'a complete success and congratulations go out to the winners and to all participants. Experience through age...
