One of their numbers missin by Adrienne Graham Gardner Over 50 well-wishers, local notables and family gathered at the Tiny municipal offices in Perkinsfield on Monday night to attend the inaugural meeting of the council members returned to office in the recent election. Reeve Morris Darby was acclaimed to his position for the second time, and Deputy Reeve John Lackie, councillors Ron Hamelin, John Butler and "Gabe"' Brunelle were suc- cessful in retaining their seats. Ron Hamelin was unable to attend the ceremonies, having suffered a severe heart attack on Friday, Nov. 21., He is. now in satisfactory condition in a Toronto hospital. Tiny clerk, Guy Maurice, will travel to Toronto today to swear councillor Hamelin in at his bed~ide. It is expected Hamelin will be released by the end of the week. And, as John Butler said 'Knowing Ron, he'll be back on his feet before long." Allegiance The inaugural meeting began with clerk Maurice ad- ministering the oaths of office and allegiance to all four members of council, and_ then ushering them to their seats. Reverend Gordon Finney of Elmvale Anglican Church then spoke to the meeting, reminding them that elected representatives are ultimately responsible not to the 'put people, but to God, from whom their authority is derived. He encouraged council to make just decisions, according to their own conscience, and not to be influenced by pressure groups or outside influences. Father Cyril Robitaille of Lafontaine advised council to make people feel that they count, so that "you'll have the entire township behind -ou."" The huge size . present-day institutions have a tendency to make the individual seem small in comparison, the Father added, and elected representatives must "be aware of the danger of losing touch."' Councillors should "always reflect the human dignity of those who address them"' and to achieve true wisdom should be "open to being taught."' Letters o f congratulation and regrets from the township of Tay, the Tro wen of Penetanguishene, Ainley and Associates, Victoria Harbour, Member of Parliament Doug Lewis and MPP George Taylor were then read by the clerk. Finally, councillors, who had no opportunity for speech-making during the recent campaign, were givena chance to speak. Relative newcomer '"*Gabe" Brunelle welcomed the chance to the experience gained througha year in office to work after 'Gust having got my feet wet." Brunelle was appointed a year ago to take over the position PACKAGE 'A left vacant by Vince Marchildon following his resignation. Jinx Councillor John Butler commented that although roads department chairmen have never been returned to office, he had somehow managed to "break this jinx" and looked forward to completion of the new subdivision agreement and the shoreline study in the coming two years under the leadership of Reeve Darby. Butler also expressed thanks to his wife and children, for 'constant support and in- spiration'"' and wished Ron Hamelin a speedy recovery, "so he can do the things he wanted to accomplish". Rev. Robitaille then led the meeting in a prayer for the recovery of the missing coun- cillor. asking that "'his temporary weakness lead to eventual strength and wisdom."' Deputy-reeve John NEW IN MIDLAND _INTRODUGCING Lackie thanked Tiny electors for "a real compliment' in re- election, and looked forward to another two years with a council who "respect and enjoy each other'. Lackie noted that the appointment of Reeve Darby as president of the Association of Rural Ontario Municipalities (ROMA) would present a challenge both to the Reeve, and to those on the "home front'. He predicted that even such mundane issues as garbage disposal would be a challenge. Reeve Darby was the last to speak, and thanked Tiny for ac- claiming him to office for the second time, after twelve years in office. He then asked for a moment of silence for the late "Mike" Asselin who served the township for many years as clerk. Tiny's most valuable asset. according to the Reeve, is its agricultural land, which is relatively accessible to markets. The Reeve noted recent achievements of council including protective severance policies in agricultural areas. the restricted removal of topsoil, methods for providing public access to the shoreline while "showing consideration to private property Owners" through restricted parking. He interpreted the return of council to office as endorsement by Tiny of these policies as well as the controversial with- drawal from the Area Board, where "dollars spent simply were not justified, and the work could be accomplished under another um- brella". Reeve Darby pledged cooperation with neigh- bouring municipalities, and added that the role of the head of council was "not to direct council, but to work with them." The Reeve expressed "total agreement with the re- election of council,'"' and said "'we're ap- proachable."' He then appointed Councillor John Butler as Finance Chairman, John Lackie as Roads Chairman, Gabe Brunelle as Fire Department Chairman and Ron Hamelin as Chairman of the Water Department.
