Coldwater Four time champion bv FE. Lorraine Orr Once again, for the fourth year in a row, Jack Teskey has claimed first prize at the Royal. His Birdsfoot Trefoil placed first in open class, and second in Pedigree at the 1980 Winter Fair in Toronto. His Timothy seed placed third in it's class. The grounds of the Coldwater Memorial Library have received a face lifting. Villagers were concerned when the two majestic blue spruce trees were removed from the front of the building. However, the new landscaping with low shrubs is very com- plimentary to _ the beauty of the building itself. Additional trees are to be planted in the spring of 1981. The refinishing of the water-damaged interior wall is now _ being completed. The book committee has purchased more best-sellers with the remaining book-budget funds. These books will be available to the public soon. The cir- culation report for the month of October shows Fiction, 544; non- fiction 164; juvenile, 179: making a total of 887 The annual Christmas dance conducted by the Coldwater Curling Club will be held on Satur- day. December 13, at the Community Centre, commencing at. 8:30 p.m Tickets are available at Beach's Shell station and are$3.50 per -person. Musie will be by the Bellaires, and lunch will be served. The Coldwater Senior Citizens are having their Christmas party on Thursday, Dec. 11, at 12:30 noon in _ the Riverside Centre. The dinner is to be catered and all members are welcome. The Christmas spirit was alive early in Coldwater when the Coldwater Canadiana members. held their annual Christmas party as the Log House on Saturday, Nov. 9. A turkey dinner with all the delicious trimmings was enjoyed before the large fireplace. Cay Thomson and Peggy Townes were respon- sible for the cooking of the fowl and the members _ generously donated the accessories. Carol singing, led by Margot Finan, added to the holiday celebrations. Entert- ainment was provided by Grace Leigh, Pat Hogan and Lillian Bell. Ruth Edit; Treasurer, Jean Car- son. : Carols by candle light enhanced the Christmas celebrations for the members of the Cold- water and _ District Horticultural Society at their annual party recently. The Christmas centrepieces were won by Marg Jennings and Lillian O'Connor for the lucky numbers under their saucers. A ceramic cookie jar representing a gingerbread house was won by Irene Wells. It was necessary. to conduct a short business meeting to select a nominating committee for the January elec- tions. June Lolk will head this committee. The president, Lorraine Orr, made special mention of the charter members present, who were, Mrs. Nel Clarke, Mrs. Doris Cooke. Mrs. Cora Lane, and Mrs. Olive and Bill Wylie. A resume of the bulb planting in the village explained to the audience that five dozen daffodils will be waving their bright heads beside the Riverside Centre in the spring of 1981. Red tulips and white crocus will appear at the postoffice and a mixture of tulips at the Woon memorial park. Exhibitors winning at the society's spring, summer and fall flower shows are awarded points. The Jack Tip- ping award is then presented to the person accumulating the highest number of prize points for the year. The award went this year to a verv surprised Irene Wells. of Coulson. Although Mrs. Wells is a director of the society, information had been successfully kept a secret and she was amazed when Helen Booth ¢alled her name as the winner. Irene received a "keeper" trophy and her name will be engraved on the Sunday visitors bv Eleanor Edwards large plaque. The ordinary corn husk was magically turned into beautiful flowers and wreaths and attractive dolls by guest speaker Mrs. Alice Cockburn of War- minster. Mrs. Cockburn had brought a wide selection of her craft and also demonstrated how to make the various articles. The exchange of gifts brought the enjoyable evening to a close. There will not be a December meeting. A directors' meeting will be held on Monday, Jan. 5, at 9:30 a.m. The next regular meeting will be on Thursday, January 15, at 8 p.m. at the Riverside Centre. Birthday congratu- lations to Diane Godwin, who says. she _ is celebrating her "29th- plus a few". Villagers 'will be pleased to learn that Horace Sallows has returned home following a_ serious illness that kept him in the Toronto General Hospital for some time. Melanie Fontaine was treated by her friends, Barbara Finan and Valerie Orr to dinner and a show to celebrate her 15th birthday. Renovations are almost completed at the Athron Marine. The building which originally contained the boats and snowmobiles was demolished and an addition made to the modern marina. This smaller office will serve as the sales outlet for the gas station. Congratulations to Carla Ostertag on her engagement to Mac Steele of Mississippi Station, Ontario. 'The sympathy of the villagers is extended to Kay and Dan Martin on the sudden death of their son. John Bannerman, son of Orla and Irene Bannerman, is at present touring the east coast with a_ singing group. John is a graduate of Ryerson Technical Institute in Toronto, having majored in the School of Dance and Theatre Arts. Excited shoppers boarded a bus last Tuesday for a Christ- mas shopping trip to the Eaton Centre in Toronto. Many _ in- teresting purchases were made and the shoppers enjoyed the beautiful Christmas decorations throughout the Centre. Visiting with the Peter Ostertag family recently were Pat and Arnold Steele of Mississippi Station, Ontario. They are the parents of Carla's fiance. Mac Steele. The home of John and Eva Maurer was destroyed by fire last week. John returned from shopping in Coldwater to find the house ablaze. He broke a window with his hand and managed to rescue the family cat, some jewellery. and other business and personal items. A fund has been established at -- the Toronto Dominion Bank in Coldwater for anyone wishing to donate. Ella Reid and Grace Willmott have returned from a holiday in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. While there they joined the celebration of the natives in a parade for the anniversary of the 1912 revolution. The Massive parade is comprised entirely of public school children, all in school uniforms. The movie The Night of the Iguana was filmed at this location. During their time there the girls visited' the beaches and small villages and enjoyed the expected bartering before they made their purchases. They also saw _ the homes owned by Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Ella was especially im- pressed by the whiteness of the natives' clothing. Synthetics are not used at all. Gar- ments are made of cotton only. The wash is still done in the old- fashioned way out on the rocks and then to be bleached by the sun. Soap and bleaches are never used.
