Minor hockey brass settle 'messy' issue by Don Lawrence What could have evolved into a potentially ugly situation for Midland Minor Hockey has been resolved. For about the past week, Midland Minor Hockey executive members have been working on a solution to a dispute that came about between Jack Baguley, coach of major bantam rep hockey team and several parents. It seems several of the parents felt Baguley was not keeping within the boundaries of a coach's obligations and allowed actions. A discussion with a number of the parents was instigated and it was found that 90 per- cent of the parents and kids were happy with Baguley's coaching. One parent went as far to say he may not like the man personally but that did not affect his respect for the man as a coach. In looking at this comment, it has been noted Baguley has not had the best relations with all the parents of the players on the team. But as Baguley says, "I'm not there to suit the parents, I'm there for the kids." Baguley's knowledge of hockey accounts for the truthfulness of this statement. Several of the parents felt other parents did not say anything against Baguley because they were afraid he would cut their child from the team. Baguley has answered that comment with, "There'sno way ifa parent upsets me that I would cut his kid."' After all this had transpired, the league executive chose to dismiss any charges against Baguley but they did feel he should try to establish a better rapport with the parents. Baguley agreed he will try to do so, possibly through regular meetings with parents.
