Yes, I've been agood boy, Santa Santa Claus' recent visit to Midland Secondary School prompted a lot of requests for the upcoming Christmas Day and Randy Ritchie, football coach at MSS was no exception. Here, he was explaining to Santa how his football team came within a whisker Bantams down Barrie, Wasaga by G. Allen On Friday, Dec. 12 Barrie visited the Elmvale arena to confront the high- scoring Elmvale (Shaw's' Interiors) Bantams. Offensively, the team has an average of over five and one half goals per game; defensively, the average is less than three per game. R. Allen and Ban- nerman set the home team in a comfortable lead to end the first period. The Barrie captain (Morris) put his club back into contention with only ten seconds gone in the second period. R. Allen came back with the lone Elmvale second period goal. In the third period Miller gave Elmvale a commanding 4 to 1 lead before Barrie's J. Bell threatened by adding a second Barrie point. Chalmers scored to give Elmvale the convincing fifth goal. Paul Bumstead played a strong of- fensive game for Ebmvale, assisting on three of the goals. Other assists went to Paul Steele with (2), Chalmers, R. Allen, and Bannerman with singles each. The team missed the aggressive forechec- king and strong defensive play of one of their leading scorers, Doug Kirton, who was sitting out a suspension. It must be kept in mind that this 5-2 win was over a minor Barrie club: minor indicating that all boys on the Barrie team were aged 13 while about half of the Elmvale club were aged 14. These Barrie boys, too, were a pleasure to watch, with their ex- cellent passing, strong backchecking, and adherence to position. Elmvale downs Wasaga When the Elmvale Shaw's Interiors Bantams visited Wasaga on Saturday, Kirton was noticeably in the line-up with two goals and two assists. Paul Steele, after a slow start as a goal- getter, has found his way onto the score sheet Page 28, Friday, December 19, 1980 more regularly lately. Paul got two goals in Saturday's scrambly contest. As a spectacle of hockey skills, the game was a disappointment. Elmvale cruised to a 7-0 win, sometimes travelling in packs as if for company. Worthy of special mention for defensive play were Wayne Allen (right defence) and Steve Chalmers (right wing), a pair of players who skated well throughout the game. Some praise must be handed out to the vastly more controlled Wasaga team. The peewees added to the Wasaga roster put in a gutsy performance when coupled with the half dozen bantams who turned out for the contest. Novices down Collingwood by Murray Cochrane The Elmvale Russel Hargraves Novice A's met the Collingwood Novices in Collingwood Tuesday night and came away with a tightly fought 4-3 win. The first period saw a lot of action by both teams with end to end rushes and a lot of goal- mouth action at both ends. No goals were scored though. The Collingwood team came on strong to start the second period and scored at the 9:49 mark. Robbie Conn opened the scoring for Elmvale at the 6:08 mark with a neatly placed goal. The next few minutes saw several' good scoring chances th- warted by goaltenders at both ends of the ice, until the 2:50 mark when Robbie potted his second goal of the night for Elmvale. The Collingwood team retaliated at the 1:54 mark to tie the score 2-2 only to have Robbie come back with his third goal of the evening to put Elmvale ahead 3 to 2. The third period saw two goals scored, one by Robbie Conn at the 8:03 mark and one by Collingwood at the 0:03 mark to end the scoring at 4-3 for Elmvale. Although all the scoring was handled by Robbie Conn there were several near misses by Elmvale players Chris Crossley, Steven Earl and Richard Palmerleau. The team has im- proved greatly in the past few weeks and we should see more names on the scoring lists shortly. Sunday's game, Dec. 14, was cancelled due to poor weather con- ditions. This game against Creemore will be rescheduled. Next game will be Sunday Dec. 21 at 4:15 at Elmvale against Stayner, another strong team. The shopping rush is over... the Great Day is not yet here. You pause .. . you know not why. Another Christmas you say, and all at once you feel older, yet somehow younger. Then, as you look argund you, at family, friends, yes even strangers, you know their minds are pausing too. Here in this moment of humble reflection, cradled between what has been and what is to be, is the peace which passeth all understanding. This night . . . this Silent Night, the true Spirit of Christmas may touch your heart. Hold it closely . . . the whole world needs it, SO very, very much.
