See sports year (1980) in review in Friday's newspaper Don Lawrence sports editor Athletes prove worth in 1980 It's been a good year for Midland- Penetanguishene athletes, some reaching national exposure and others gaining notice within this area. Brian Orser of Penetanguishene made his name known as the youngest senior level skater ever to compete in international figure skating. He captured a first in senior men's figure skating in Gervais, France and a second in Oberstorf, Germany in September. In July of 1980, his sister Kay Orser signed a two vear contract to skate in the Ice Follies, marking her claim to fame on the ice. Midland's Angela Schmidt became the top Canadian female cross-country skier in the winter Olympics at Lake Placid after winning the Shell Cup for cross-country skiing in Quebec in February. The curling rink of Russ Howard, Larry Merkley, Bob Ruston and Kent Carstairs won the Labatt Tankard Southern Ontario championship in February. For that win, they advanced to the Canadian championships in Calgary in March where they represented Ontario. In Calgary they showed that our athletes can compete on a national basis. Midland's juvenile boys' volleyball team, an entry into the Ontario Volleyball Association finished third in Ontario Challenge Cup championships in Toronto Feb. 23 and 24. Midland Bulls rugby club competed in Europe against rugby teams there and found some good competition and returned late March with a new assessment of their play. Midland Oldtimers hockey club reached the semi-finals in Can-Am Oldtimers Tour- nament in Lake Placid, N.Y. State over the Easter weekend. Ecoles Secondaire Penetanguishene Secondary School students Carrie Fedorwich and Brent Farquhar made it to All-Ontario Track and Field Finals in Toronto in May as did Ernie Desroches of Midland Secondary School. Three local girls, Kelly Swales, Vicki Baziliauskas and Mary Pat Quilty, students at St. Theresa's High School in Midland competed in Ontario's Summer Games as part of ladies' volleyball team and received a gold medal in that competition. Mike Josland of Midland Secondary School also won a gold medal for his part in the victory for the Southern Ontario rugby team in the Ontario Summer Games. The list goes on and on with local athletes making their mark in the sports world. And in the midst of those sport notables, there are one or two that are bound to go on to attain higher degrees of excellence. There will be many more as well with some budding young athletes in the area that will be known for their performances on the sports fields. courts and tracks. The year 1980 was indeed good for local athletes and 1981 promises a_ younger, stronger group. So, in closing I would like to wish all residents of Midland and Penetanguishene and their families a renewed strength, not only in athletic activities but also in relations between family and neighbours.
