We are glad to report Cathy Mills has returned home from Soldiers' Memorial Hospital following Wyebridge news by Li and John Dennis Now that it is over, Joy Parker can look back contentedly secure in the knowledge that her recent "'doll display" was a success. The six-day exhibit took place in the Canadian Crafts Gift. Shop in Wyebridge and provided an education and enjoyment to all who had the pleasure of viewing this truly priceless collection, The doll display ran from December 16-21 inclusive. and if you were among the many fortunates to attend, then chances are you came away with a much richer appreciation for the world of dolls. The exhibit played host to a steady stream of spectators. Joy found it par- ticularly interesting that many of the spectators were in the possession of dolls of their own. "Many of those who ' saw the display told me that they too had dolls at home."' remarked Joy, "'and expressed a desire to bring them out of the shoe boxes and closets and clean them up." Two dolls that really stood out in my mind were the six inch replicas of Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes. Both are originals, sculptured by Joy and husband, Wayne who produced the mold. Joy and Wayne have placed a limited edition of two hundred and twenty-one sets on these dolls. but sales have been so overwhelming that an _ additional edition is in the offing. Due to the proximity of the season the six inch Santa and Mrs. Claus dolls deserve honourable mention. There are over two hundred and fifty various dolls on display representing all eras from 1820 to the present day. The most intriguing part of the display is its diversity. In one small room, the dolls range from early 1800's to the present day, from babies to old men, and all ages in between. Included in _ the collection is an original Eatons Beauty (with ribbon), a Canadian Beauty (with ribbon), a Shirley Temple doll and a host of many other famous people and time periods. Joy's love for her dolls is evident from the moment you enter the display area. Each has been placed in its particular pose with gentle loving care. Joy knows the history of each doll as to who sculptured them, when and where made. Her collection represents Saskatchewan, Wye- bridge, Quebec, Toronto, the USA and parts of Europe. Joy also had a series of books at the exhibit which enabled spec- tators to find in- formation pertaining to their dolls, such as their history, value and "birthplace." Joy and Wayne have certainly given Wvebridge area residents a Christmas gift they won't soon forget. We all owe them many thanks for sharing such a private part of their lives with us. Birthday greetings go out to Brent Reynolds who turned five years old this past Sunday, Dec. zie Brent celebrated his big day with mom and dad, Mary and Ken Reynolds and with sister Myka. Brent will no doubt be joining millions of children around the world tonight in hoping Santa Claus will pay them a visit. The Wyebridge ACW conducted a_ well- attended Christmas supper and get-together last week. The members enjoyed a_ delicious dinner at the Arch in Midland, then headed over to Jean Fallis' for a social evening filled Aspen, more than aname by Carol Crawford The name, Aspen, is legendary when discussing skiing in the United States. And there is good reason for this. Skiing is superb on four mountains with trails to please the novice and the expert alike. But what really attracts skiers is the endless night life and entertainment which makes the town hop 24 hours a day. Ski packages featuring condominiums with amenities including living rooms with fireplaces, fully equipped kitchens and maid services. For families and large groups of friends, these programs are perfect and perfectly economical. Lake Tahoe The Tahoe area looks as though it was created specifically for the day man would take up skiing. Picture the scene: a cold, blue Alpine lake, roughly oval-shaped, more than 21 miles long and ringed with snowy moun- tains. Therein lie several excellent ski resorts, and as you descend their trails you catch glimpses of the lake and its mountain back- drop. Indeed, this is the only place in the world where you can take the boat to a ski area. The Tahoe I, a cruise vessel, has regular runs between the north and south shores of Lake Tahoe, and upon disembarking you can get a shuttle bus to one of the resorts. It has been claimed that this region has the highest concentration of ski lifts in the United States - there are more than 300 of them. That accounts for a lot of ski areas, although if you look out across the lake you can't see them; they're concealed in the mountains. But of all these resorts, which range from family to international and beginner to ex- pert, there are really only three that deserve a distinctive place in the world of skiing: Heavenly Valley, Alpine Meadows and Squaw Valley USA. The evening was' spent playing games and just having a good time. Each boy was given a Kub Kar Kit by Akela Doug Reynolds, after which refreshments were served. They ended the evening by discussing new programs and events for 1981. We would like to take a moment to wish all our readers the merriest of Christmases and the happiest of New Years. Grace and George Willmott entertained friends following the annual United Church Christmas cantata. New Year's Day, observed the world over. according to the traditions and religious practices of the various countries, as a time for paying past debts and looking forward to new beginnings. In both France and Scotland, New Year's Day. instead of Christmas, is the day for the exchange of gifts. while Christmas takes the form of a religious festival. According to the Gregorian calendar, New Year's Day is Jan. 1. The Chinese New Year's_ celebration, which continues for several days and ends with the Feast of the Lanterns, is one of China's principal fetes; the Jewish New Year is called Rosh Hoshanah. In the United States, New Year celebrations combine early primitive customs with those of the modern world, as in the primitive emphasis on New Year's Eve as the time of festive ceremonies. On that night there are watch night services in churches, as well as carnivals and festive gatherings. Let's all sing of the joy of Christmas!
