But Mary Desjardins, right, was the recipient of a Christmastime cheque worth $490, her half of the Penetanguishene Figure Skating Club's 50-50 draw. The application of Penetanguishene's Commodore Hotel to the Liquor Licence Board of Ontario to become a tavern rather than a hotel. and drop its of- fering' of ac- commodations, was referred to the town's planning board by town council last week. Council at the same meeting received a report from ~ town planner Paul Hodgins remarking on_ the Commodore __ Hotel's application. Hodgins was of the opinion a problem would exist if the application were granted because as a tavern more parking space would be required under "zoning requirements than now exists. "There would appear to be a zoning problem respecting off-street parking, which stems from the hotel's intent to eliminate guest bedroom accommod- ations," Hodgins reported. "Simply put, the proposed use would require more parking spaces than the present use. Although specific details have not been provided by the Liquor Licence Board, the fact our bylaw requires one space for each guest room as compared to one space for every 75 square foot of floor area of the hotel devoted to public use, has caused me to conclude that there would be an in- crease in the number of parking spaces required: by the proposed change in use." *<En: =:summary ;"" Hodgins concluded, "the proposal would contravene the zoning bylaw." The Liquor Licence Board' has asked Penetanguishene coun- cil to inform it whether reclassification would put the hotel in con- travention of zoning or other municipal bylaw, whether the elimination of bedrooms would affect the needs and wishes of. the com- munity, and if the council would send it a copy of a resolution, is one is passed, approving the closing of bedrooms in the hotel. $1.5 million to start New Year One of the decisions taken last week by Penetanguishene council during the last meeting of 1980 was to borrow $1.5 million. Mayor Ron Bellisle explained that it is general practice for Penetanguishene council to borrow up to $1.5 million at the start of a year to cover ex- penses until tax :noney begins to arrive at the town office. Council also approved the appointment of Planning Board Chairman Ross Spearn to represent the town on the Tiny-Tay Peninsula Planning Board. Otherwise the time of the council was spent properly finishing the old year and preparing for 1981. Skating competition set for Penetanguishene The first annual club competition of the Penetanguishene Figure Skating Club will be held in Penetanguishene Arena Jan. 7. Action will get under way at four p.m. and run until eight p.m. The competition will be called Skate Penetang and there will be no admission price charged. There will be 20 intermediate skaters and 10 seniors skaters entered in the competition and all parents are encouraged to show up. The club would especially like to see the parents of junior division skaters show up as it would show them what their son or daughter might achieve and therefore give them a better understanding of the sport. Another record low in Huronia Christmas Day - 1980 will go into the record books as the coldest Dec. 25 on record in Huronia. The temperature dipped to well below 30 below during the wee small hours of morning. It was the second time this winter that a record low had been notched in North Simcoe. On Dec. 17 the mercury plummeted to 30 below as well to set an all-time low reading for any Dec. 17 on record. Planner Spearn joins Baker, Dion on TTPPB Penetanguishene's Planning Board chairman has been appointed to complete the town's slate of representatives on the Tiny- Tay Peninsula Planning Board. Mayor Ron Bellisle says he supports the appointment of Ross Spearn, who joins Councillors Ray Baker and Lionel Dion, because Spearn is a planner, not a politician. The TTPPB has become too political, in the mayor's opinion, and the appointment of a planner will help swing the balance back to planning from politics, he says. All smoke no fire Christmas Eve Only one fire alarm marred an otherwise uneventful Christmas week for members of the Penetanguishene Fire Department. A motor in a boiler room at the Mental Health Centre overheated. The system responded properly by shutting down but MH- C employees were alarmed by the smell in the air and weren't able immediately to locate the source. Firefighters attending the 9 p.m. alarm on Christmas Eve arrived to find there was no fire. Good hockey not only - gift Friday night 3 ' at Kings' game When the Penetanguishene Kings Jr. C hockey team play Friday night in Penetanguishene Arena at 8:30 p.m., children under 12 will find it particularily interesting. That's because the first 50 children under 12 that are accompanied by an adult will be given a free Penetanguishene Junior Kings Crested hockey puck. These are the real thing and should provide quite a collector's item for the children. So. there will be something for everyone Friday night in Penetanguishene Arena, some good hockey action for those true hockey fans and a Kings' Hockey puck for the kids.
